Social dialogueIntegration of refugees

Objectives

In 2019, when the “Superhero: good stories from around the world” project was written, Europe was dealing with the largest wave of migrations since the World War II, roughly 1.8 million refugees from Africa and Middle East seeking asylum in European countries (2018 report by UNHCR) in hope for a better future and a secure life. Put into perspective, the number of refugees equals 3% of Italy's population, less than the entire population of Rome. While the number of refugees coming in is decreasing each year, the challenge nowadays is facilitating their social inclusion within the European countries. We see an increase in the negative exposure that refugees and immigrants receive from the media and the rising of ultra-right nationalist parties. The issue of xenophobia, fear of the unfamiliar that changes the way people are perceived by the community, influences the process of integration of young refugees and immigrants. Becoming part of a community and being economically independent requires time and open mindness, as well as an understanding of each culture, the stories behind the people and the existing opportunities that could facilitate this process. Seeing the situation after the latest provincial elections in Trento, the change in the budget allocation for supporting refugees and the local people's negative attitude towards them, we believe that by creating more projects that give the opportunity of exchange between local people and minorities, there will be an improvement in the integration process and the approach of the local community. Another issue that young people are facing is the high rate of youth unemployment and under qualified youth. The percentage of youth unemployment in our partner countries is significantly high: Italy with 31,90%, France with 21,10% and Norway with 10,30% (stated in the Trading Economics 2019 survey). The "Superhero" project was created to answer: - the need of European citizens to expand their cultural awareness and understand the migration realities in order to trigger behavioural changes - the growing need of young people nowadays to express their stories, expand their cultural awareness, be connected to others and their desire to develop new skills and competences in order to become active change makers in their own communities - the need of underqualified and unemployed youth to acquire new hard and soft skills that would help them develop and increase their employability opportunities. To address these needs and issues, we created the opportunity for a group of 20 participants, including youth with fewer opportunities, coming from Italy, Norway and France, to take part in a youth exchange which was organized in Trento between 13th and 21st of September 2021. The project was supposed to be implemented initially in June 2020, but given the Covid 19 pandemy situation, we had to postpone the implementation date of the APV and Youth Exchange. Throughout the youth exchange, the participants shared stories of successful social inclusion in local communities of young refugees and second generation immigrants, as well as stories of NGOs that are making a difference towards shifting behaviours and perceptions regarding refugees and immigrants through social inclusion projects. The objectives of the project were: - Raise awareness on the issues of immigration within the European context and in particular on the issue of integration of people with diverse cultural background within the local community, by analyzing the current migration realities and social-inclusion strategies in each partner country - Reduce the level of xenophobia by sharing inspirational stories and cultural profile of the countries of origin or our participants Improve and promote awareness of the European dimension, the objectives and values of the EU among the project participants, local partners and the local/European community Support young people to develop new hard skills (digital competences, media literacy) and soft skills (responsibility, team work, communication in a foreign language, confidence, critical thinking), skills that will also enhance their employability. The reason we chose the name “Superhero” for our project was to transmit a very important message to our direct and indirect target groups, that everyone has the power to impact positively other people’s lives through its actions. By empowering the young participants, giving them the knowledge of different cultures, as well as specific digital and journalism competences, they would be able to become the superheroes in their own communities once they returned home.
