As Popoli Insieme Association we have a wide experience on sensitization, education and welcoming projects for refugees. Some questions that we face every day, being an NGO created by volunteers dealing with asylum seekers and refugees, are: what are the needs of refugees that can be met by volunteers? Which expectations push young people to volunteer in the social area? What is the best way to promote an inclusive way of volunteering? Our aim as Association is to reach out to marginalized people, promoting diversity and intercultural dialogue, as well as the respect of human rights. For the year 2020, in particular, Padua was elected as “European Volunteering Capital”:being located in the city of Padua, Associazione Popoli Insieme is very concerned with this award With this project the Consortium wanted to promote volunteering, not only with asylum seekers and refugees but even in other social areas, among young people. We had planned a detailed timetable according to needs and expectations, trying to offer to our participants the most effective image of Padua as a European Volunteering Capital. Unfortunately the Pandemic forced us to rearrange many times our first plans but we can finally say that we reached our first objective, that was let young people know more about volunteering in the social area and meeting intercultural diversity in particolat with migrant people. At the same time, we wanted to build social cohesion in our local community and to spread it among the participant’s countries: with a special focus on migration, participants have widened their global view of the world, felt like European citizens and like citizens of the world. Another reason why we wanted to carry out this project was to give a different answer on the first questions: by exploring the needs and expectations of the participants and by improving their soft skills as volunteers, participants have also discovered some new best practices that they can now disseminate in their countries. The project aimed at involving people from 7 countries: unfortunately, due to the Pandemic, we could involve only participants from 5. As accorded with our partner organization and with Italian NA, we implemented the project with a Consortium of 5. Young volunteers from 5 different countries came out at the end of the project with a new social awareness. Encouraging intercultural dialogue, promoted diversity, tolerance and the respect of human rights. For refugees from our Association who took part in the youth exchange and for the asylum seekers hosted in our facilities, the project had a great role in developing their inclusion through practices of informal and non-formal education During the exchange, all the participants had the chance to build a counter-narrative about migration issues, they were asked to give their personal opinion and they were informed about refugees’ issues among the society, in order to spread critical thinking. We believe that Erasmus+ is an effective instrument to promote all these European values, to foster social integration, enhance intercultural understanding and a sense of belonging to a community.
