The implementation of the project Taste Before You Waste may be considered a full success. As our lives depend on food, we need to ensure that we use it responsibly. Food waste is a significant concern, data in the EU shows that around 88 million tonnes of food waste are generated in a year and the cost associated is of 143 billion euros. (FUSIONS, 2016). Globally, it is reported that 1/3 of the food produced for human consumption ends up as waste (FAO, 2011). Nowadays, it is alarming due to the impact that it generates: environmental pollution, climate change, degradation, and waste of natural resources, and also raising concerns in terms of food security: the existing gap between developed and developing countries in terms of access to food and use of food. Developed countries (OECD classification) are the main contributors to food waste, whereas developing countries struggle with poverty, and malnutrition because of the lack of food. According to the report ''Estimates of European food waste levels'' of FUSIONS for the European Commission, the main place where food waste occurs is the household. Therefore, this project aims to raise awareness among youth about the problem of food waste and the need to promote sustainable consumption, starting from their daily environment which is at home. In previous projects where we have participated as partners, we have noticed the lack of knowledge and understanding about food waste. Consequently, our idea was to raise awareness about this problem among youth, give them the possibility to learn about this issue from different countries, exchange ideas, reflect on the existing problems and find ways together through teamwork can reach the main aim of the project and spread awareness about the topic. The first step we took was to address the participants about this problem, then we started spreading some knowledge about what is food waste, how it affects our environment, and why we need active youth to take action and build among youth a mentality of sustainable consumption that benefits our society. This project gathered 6 countries: Portugal, Spain, Romania, Slovakia, Lithuania, and the host country Italy. These countries offer different backgrounds and a culturally diversified space when it comes to the topic of food waste and sustainable consumption. Therefore, having the possibility to hear how food waste is impacting every single country and how those countries are creating a good practice to reduce it was one of the fundamental elements in order to succeed with the objectives of the project. The participants had the chance to get a multilateral perspective on the issue of food waste, reflect on the differences between countries, understand how the differences are perceived, and work together for common goals such as reduction, prevention of food waste, innovative business solutions from food waste and the possibility to embrace a model of sustainable consumption and practical tools that can be used in order to achieve the goal of our project. The achieved objectives of our project were: - to raise awareness among the youth participants about the problem of food waste in the EU and globally; - to raise awareness among the youth participants about the meaning of sustainable consumption and how is connected to food waste; - to raise awareness among the youth participants about the EU 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development offers an understanding of goal 12 on sustainable consumption; - to raise awareness among the youth participants about innovative businesses: recycling, reuse, and upcycling; - to encourage youth participants to reflect on the possible solutions and strategies to reduce food waste starting from their daily habits; - to encourage youth participants to reflect on the possible solutions and strategies to prevent food waste; - to improve the communication skills of the youth participants in a foreign language: English; - to improve the learning skills of the youth participants through the use of non-formal teaching in the activities of the project; - to improve the creative and strategic thinking of the youth participants in food waste reduction and prevention activities; - to create a space for intercultural dialogue, and promote diversity and cooperation among the participants for future projects; - to provide the youth participants with a set of skills and tools to implement new business ideas: recycling, reuse, and upcycling; - to promote social inclusion, partnership, and solidarity among the youth participants and the partner organizations; - to promote youth involvement in projects and activities within the Erasmus+ framework;
