Med Food Lab is an Erasmus+ Youth Exchange that aims to explore the topic of nutrition, the impact of our life styles on the environment and the sustainability of local productions, following the principles of the Mediterranean diet, considered intangible humanity heritage by UNESCO and a link between the countries involved in this project. This is why this youth exchange will have participants coming from Greece, Spain, Portugal, France, Croatia and Italy, cultures full of old traditional recipes and that promotes a more sustainable way of producing, preparing and consuming food. In the last decade Europe has registered an increased level of obesity among its population, no matter the age, which causes negative consequences on the health of people such as cardio-circulatory, respiratory, digesting, metabolism, musculoskeletal and even psychological problems. The contentious gathering of people into big urban centers and the easy access to food, has helped the spreading of sedentary life styles, especially among young people, which adds up to the low percentage of them practicing any sport. Already prepared and high calorie content food, sugar based drinks and the excessive consumption of meat, are part of unhealthy nutrition habits which are spreading more and more. This life styles produce negative effect also on the environment, as the food industry in general is exploiting the natural resources in a way that biodiversity is constantly reducing and the land is becoming more and more poor. Cultural and social changes, such as urbanization, are also contributing to the loss of more rural nutritional traditions, while fast pace of modern life is leaving very little time to dedicate for the preparation of meals. This changes have also influenced negatively the production and distribution of food, favoring the big industry and the waste of natural resources of the plane which causes environmental issues. This project aims to raise awareness about this topics and highlight the innovative aspect that the Mediterranean diet can bring to the table, given its variety of ingredients which guarantee healthier and more sustainable life styles, starting with the reduction of meat consumption, to the promotion of local, typical and seasonal agricultural products, as well as more traditional farming techniques which have less impact on the environment. Participants will begin measure the impact of their nutrition habits, to think critically and become more aware of the changes they can initiate themselves. Tramonti is the perfect laboratory for exploring this topic, thanks to the many projects about recovering of local biodiversity and promotion of local products that have been carried on by the Municipality of Tramonti and other associations of the area. The project will also introduce participants to the rules of the waste division of the area, other than reflecting on the topic of reducing the waste production and food waste. In short the objectives of the programme will be: - to learn more about the Mediterranean diet and the importance to adopt more sustainable nutrition habits, both for people that for nature; - to explore our own culinary cultures and that of other countries through sharing of traditional recipes; - to understand the importance of valorising local products; - to develop critical thinking on life styles and the impact they have on the environment and in our everyday life; - to learn more about different cultures and promote dialogue and tollerance; - to promote active citizenship and participation.
