Objectives

By implementing this project, we wanted to correspond to the request and need of our youngsters to take the lead and the initiative to organize a youth exchange on their own, tackling a common issue between the two shores of the Mediterranean: Illegal immigration. It was important for us to support them in this action, as this will and need of theirs occurred after their participation in the Youth Exchange “The other side seEU there” that was implemented in Tunisia in 2019. They were so interested, empathized, and motivated by their experience there that they decided to continue working on this topic with the same participating countries and design and implement its second edition: “The other side seEU there II” only this time focusing on non-formal education, and Media Literacy and implementing the Youth Exchange in Agrigento Sicily. The need of supporting our youngsters who are living in rural areas and provide them with opportunities was also embraced by our partners, as we were all facing the same problem, we all live in countries from where immigrants either depart or arrive. This project was the creation of a common effort as the application was written together with our partners and our youth teams and its main key elements were self-reflection, non-formal education, and media literacy, and more specifically their usage in addressing and tackling the issues of Illegal immigration and human rights, prejudices, stereotypes, racism, and xenophobia, and recognition and embracement of Cultural diversity. Along with participants and partners from 8 different countries, we wanted through non-formal and informal education to give participants the opportunity to understand better the existing situation concerning migration and illegal migration and its reasons, analyze the existing stereotypes and prejudices in their communities concerning this issue, develop their skills and competences and learn how to use media in order to raise awareness and stand up for human rights. Since we had participants with different cultural backgrounds, our priority was to create a safe learning environment, where they could without fear express themselves, share ideas and points of view, learn from each other, and all together discover the best ways to combat these phenomena of xenophobia and racism. To achieve all the above, we used different kinds of interactive methods and approaches, based on non-formal education tools such as teamwork, brainstorming, media creation workshops, and of course reflection and evaluation. In this way, participants learnt how to be open-minded, how to be tolerant and accept diversity, and how to behave in conflict situations and especially in multi-ethnic/ multicultural communities. The objectives of the project were the following: • to raise awareness of the different realities that surround us, in particular, the importance of non-formal learning in improving respect for human rights • to raise awareness and bring public opinion to question the real conditions in which migrants and refugees live and the lack of perspectives they are facing in order to change the public’s stereotyped opinions and have a new approach to this topic. • to create space for discussion, develop a reflection on issues of secrecy, strengthen operational engagement and collaboration of civil society actors on the management of illegal immigration • to build capacity, highlight media skills and motivate participants, and improve the quality of their intervention in society • to create a “Media awareness campaign” on illegal immigration issues, and to improve the quality of youth work on the local and Euro-Mediterranean level At the same time, the project contributed: • to raise participants’ awareness of personal and cultural identity and its importance. • to develop participants’ empathy, critical thinking, and communication skills. • to create an inclusive and safe learning environment for participants, supporting their personal and professional development. • to provide the space and time for participants to develop actions that were combating discrimination. • to enable and promote among participants the usage of media as a tool for education, communication, combating racism and xenophobia, and standing up for human rights. • to increase participants’ self-empowerment and self-esteem. Through these objectives, we aimed to empower and equip with the necessary skills and competences youngsters from Italy, Spain, France, Greece, Turkey, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco enabling them to: • speak up for and support the rights of minorities by using media as a tool • be more aware of discrimination and prejudices in their everyday life, the local community, and the society they live in, and be able to take initiatives to tackle it and even better, prevent it • learn to accept diversity, be empathetic and open-minded, and better understand other youth groups in their community, especially youngsters belonging to minority groups (e.g., refugees, migrants, etc.) or youngsters with fewer opportunities in general (coming from rural areas, facing economic and social/ cultural obstacles, etc.) • become promoters and multipliers after this experience of tolerance, empathy, understanding, intercultural dialogue, and human rights.
