The You (th) rope project was aimed at 25 young people (and 5 group leaders) from 5 countries (Italy, Spain, Croatia, Germany and France), with the aim of involving them in an exchange activity lasting 5 days (excluding travel days). The general objective was to allow them to share time and space to discuss various issues, first of all that of European citizenship; reflecting, in particular, on the rights and duties associated with it. Participants acquired skills and tools to consciously exercise their role as active citizens and to become, themselves, actors in a process of bringing citizens closer to Europe and rediscovering shared common values. The project was conceived by young people from the mobility area, together with other young people they met during previous exchange projects, and started with the identification of common problems and needs identified by these young people. Faced with problems such as unemployment, the lack of opportunities and services, young people often feel destabilized and powerless: a situation that leads to more and more withdrawing into their individualism to protect themselves from the new and the different, not actively participating in the development of society in which they live. The pandemic due to COVID 19, which emerged during the project implementation, causing a delay, has further exacerbated this situation, accentuating the isolation and the sense of powerlessness and exclusion of many young people and an ever greater distance from the EU and to its inhabitants (also spatial due to reduced mobility). Promoting knowledge of the European context in which we live was the first and fundamental need identified by the project, as an aspect to allow young people to understand risks and opportunities, so as to have a basis for choosing and acting consciously. Promoting the empowerment of young people so that they themselves act as actors of change by becoming ropes that connect Europe to the local and peripheral context was the second need identified, as necessary to support that integration process that must be able to count on everyone and must be able to give back to all. For these reasons, You (th) rope intended to achieve the following objectives: • to foster knowledge among young people about the meaning of (active) citizenship and European citizenship, including the tools that make it possible to exert it; • to know and reflect on human rights and on how these universally recognized rights have been absorbed in Europe by reflecting on their history, on their value and on the instruments that recognize and protect them; • Strengthen knowledge among young people about the opportunities offered by the European Union, as a fundamental factor in strengthening their sense of belonging and against phenomena of closure, individualism and nationalistic tendencies; • Strengthen the role of young people through the acquisition of skills that allow them to act and play the role of multipliers in order to bring citizens closer to Europe; participants thus carried out a mobility together that allowed them to exchange ideas, opinions, and acquire knowledge and skills on the subject, experimenting themselves. For many it was also the first opportunity to travel and meet "post-covid" and for the most part the very first exchange they took part in.
