Project summary

Focus: Intergenerational Dialogue In contemporary society the question of the relationship between young and old people is becoming increasingly important. Democratic societies are inclusive: ideally, all citizens would be part of the policymaking process. However in practice, some citizens participate more than others, and certain groups remain largely underrepresented. The lack of dialogue between these 2 groups leads to not understanding each other’s needs. A clear example is Brexit case: Recent political events, such as the Brexit referendum in 2016, illustrate very well how the participation (or lack thereof) of citizens of a certain age group in policymaking can have a decisive influence on a society’s main political choices: many young people wanted the UK (75 %) to stay within the European Union, But Instead 70% of old people vote for Leave. Due to the increase in the demographic age, the elderly are more than the young so this lack of dialogue penalizes first of all the young people who suffer the choices of the old: So the older generations defined their future for them. Young people feel European values more than old people. This story illustrates the value of dialogue, in light of a sound intergenerational equity. A democracy should be people centred, and bring benefits to everyone General Objective: • Stimulating intergenerational dialogue and solidarity between generation and promote European values Specific Objectives: • Collect and disseminate Best practices (at least 2 for country) concerning Intergenerational dialogue in order to compare the way in which young and elderly adults cooperate to achieve a mutually acceptable reference; Activity: • Training activity for youth workers in Italy to learn Human library methodology; • 4 TPM • Create a Country snapshots concerning the project Topic (Final Output); • organize at least one experience of dialogue between young and old people in the country with the methodologies of the living library in such a way that the old ones understand the difficulties of young people today and vice versa.

Objectives

General Objective: - To stimulate intergenerational dialogue and solidarity between generations by promoting European values. Specific Objective: - To foster moments of encounter and dialogue between young and old; - Encourage positive moments of encounter and relations and stimulate young people, who are themselves bearers of turbulence and suffering linked to their growth process, to adopt the right tools to face this path in a conscious and effective manner with respect to the construction of their own identity.

Background

The project addressed the theme of the generation gap between young and old people.Generation Gap can be defined as difference in attitude and behaviour between older people and younger people, which may cause them to argue or may prevent them from understanding each other fully. Young people believe that they are grown-ups and it is high time for them to be independent. This helps them to gain more self-esteem. On the whole, both parents and young peolpe do not see things from the standpoints of each other. Thus, misunderstanding is a great cause for the formation of the generation gap. The project started from the Brexit example: According to YouGov, it was the older people who voted in favour of Brexit. And to choose, therefore, the future of the younger ones who, instead, would have wanted (almost all) to remain in the European Union. This why there was an absence of dialogue between these generations that did not allow for an understanding of each other's motives
