Gender equality / equal opportunitiesInclusion - equityEU Citizenship, EU awareness and Democracy

Objectives

Gender equality concerns us all. It is a fundamental right as well as an internationally agreed Sustainable Development Goal. Achieving gender equality is central to the protection of human rights, the functioning of democracy, respect for the rule of law, and economic growth and competitiveness. Main factor blocking progress toward equality and keeping gender inequality alive is gender stereotypes. The assumptions we make based on gender can result in people being treated differently or offered different opportunities based on their gender. Gender stereotypes are complex and originate from local culture and traditions. F.e. 34% in Lithuania, 33% in Romania and Bulgaria still think it is not acceptable for men to cry. More than 70% of respondents in Lithuania, Poland and Greece believe that women are more likely than men to make decisions based on their emotions. 81% in Bulgaria, 78% in Hungary and 77% in Poland, believe most important role of a woman is to take care of her home and family (Gender Equality, Euro-barometer 2017). The highest gender stereotype index (Euro-barometer 2017) are most likely to be found in eastern, central and some southern Member States, with highest in Bulgaria(12.4), Hungary(11.3), Lithuania (10.9) and lowest in Sweden (3) Denmark (4.4.), Spain (5.1). The awareness that both genders are equally important, equal, equivalent and equally treated and that they must have equal opportunities in life is crucial. Therefore, to achieve gender equality, raising awareness on the gender stereotypes, their harmfulness and negative consequences is very important. More than nine in ten (91%) Europeans believe promoting gender equality is important to ensure a fair and democratic society and 84% believe gender equality is important for them personally. To limit gender inequality over time, reaching young adults is key. Young people are the innovators, creators, builders and leaders of the future. They can contribute most to re-creating gender stereotypes. Project’s aim is to promote equality and enable young people to recognize and deconstruct gender stereotypes and address gender equality in daily life. During the project we will demonstrate how existing values and norms influence our picture of reality, perpetuate stereotypes and support mechanisms (re)producing inequality. We will challenge values and gender norms by explaining how they influence and limit the opinions taken into consideration and decision-making. Besides that, project activities aims at stimulating a general sensitivity to gender issues. Objectives of the project are to: -raise knowledge of the participants on gender and gender related issues -reveal and break gender stereotypes among participants, challenge false information and provide different models by constructing narrative which is in line with European values -raise awareness on the importance of gender equality and identify steps leading to gender equal society -promote gender equality -promote European values, respect for diversity, intercultural dialogue, tolerance and human rights -promote Erasmus+ Youth programme and generate new project ideas -enhance participants skills and abilities, foster critical-thinking, promote intercultural communication and international cooperation, facilitating social inclusion, strengthening solidarity at an international level and building networks at local, national and international levels By reaching above mentioned objectives we believe that youth exchange ‘No hype for stereotypes will contribute to creating gender equal societies, raising awareness among communities on gender based issues and moreover will lead to gender empowerment of young people in participating countries.
