“The environment is where we all meet; where we all have a mutual interest; it is the one thing all of us share,” “Like music and art, love of nature is a common language that can transcend political or social boundaries,” are words of wisdom political figures and environmental activists have spoken and they will not be forgotten. This is because the natural world has persisted in being an inspiration for humankind, especially Europeans, when it comes to creating art, music, laws, and researching science. The state of our planet today is one of constant deterioration when it comes to ecology and environmental protection. In spite of the fact that citizens of Europe enjoy some of the highest environmental standards in the world, there is still much to be done to improve the situation. The EU plays a key role in promoting sustainable development for all its citizens as outlined in Europe’s 2020 and 2030 strategies, as well as on a global level, but in the meantime much more has to be done in small local communities around the continent where information about, and recycling practices are not easily available. In support of these efforts, we wished to raise awareness among young people about serious environmental issues and possible solutions through our project, for it is young people, from whom we are borrowing our planet, who can make a difference for the better. We aimed to bring youths together in a learning process that would not only educate them, but create a mutual point from where green practices would resound in each European region, and beyond. Additionally, the objectives included: - fostering the creative process to find solutions to existing problems; - acquiring soft skills which are as valuable as hard skills for employers and can be used in the labour market; - promoting peace and European values and supporting active citizenship to combat environmental and social issues; - learning how to recycle; - promotion of tolerance, intercultural dialogue, and respect for cultural and linguistic diversity with the aim to look at all this variety as a forte and a foundation of unity, instead of a point of division. All of these were shared objectives with the EU, the strategic framework for European Cooperation in Education and Training, and the Erasmus+ Programme in accordance with Article 2 of the Treaty on the European Union. With the project and its objectives we raised the awareness of young people on this important topic and enhanced their participation in local communities leading to improvements in their daily lives. Open cooperation and open exchange of good practices made a positive impact on youngsters about environmental protection and promoted a greener way of life.
