Objectives

Participants compared the recycling system in their countries and in Malta, especially the theory on paper and the actual situation. They met with local authorities responsible for the system, school representatives to find out how they learn about it, and with individual citizens. They experienced for themselves how much recyclable materials is laying on the streets, in the parks, in water by the marina, spread around the designated collection places. They discussed it between themselves and came up with new ideas that will be presented at the end of their sessions to the local council. The activity consisted of reviewing the existing system in Malta in one particular locality (Msida), both on paper in reality. Further, the participants met with local authorities responsible for recycling collection and further processing designing, implementing and enforcing the collection rules (Wasteserv). They also met with the representatives of GreenPak and RRRA - Resource Recovery and Recycling Agency. After they analyzed the situation, they compared their findings with practices in their own countries in a brainstorming session and produced material that was presented to the local council. Participants in each group studied and prepared information about the situation related to the recyclables in their country. During their experience with Malta, they worked with this material and compared it with the situation they encountered. They analyzed the differences and looked for the reasons for them. They discussed their outcomes with other groups and come to common results, findings. For the follow-up, their experience and outcome were shared in their organizations, schools, local councils and through the media to influence their community and the existing system to better.
