How can young people survive the daily jungle of opportunities, challenges and choices they have to make? On top of that they have parents, family and friends that have expectations. And let’s not forget about how society sees young people, claiming certain behaviour and that young people need to change and mold by adults to become productive members of society. In the midst of this turbulence young people are developing their identities, self-esteem, self awareness and awareness of others and are trying to make the right decisions for a good quality life of oneself and others. So what is the best way to support young people in this process of identity building by us youth workers? In the past six years we have collaborated in various partnerships, young people and youth workers during programmes focusing on personal development of young people. Simultaneously, we have also had the chance to guide young people in their journey to develop a variety of human rights and social justice related programmes. The reflections and evaluations of these two types of programmes have led us to understand that youth development programmes solely based on a positive youth development approach is limited in its ability to acknowledge how power and privilege shape young people’s identity. If we want to support young people in their identity development and strengthen their agency, an evident element is to understand how individual identities, and identities of others, are shaped by life experiences. In the Inside Out youth development programme, we merge the lessons learned of these two different types of youth programmes and we bring the personal (interior) and the outside (exterior) world of young people together; Inside Out and Outside In. Objectives - The Inside Out model aims to support young peoples’ identity exploration in relation with life experiences, the development of self-awareness & solidarity and supports young peoples’ sense of agency. Our priority goal in this programme is to support all young people in achieving a high quality of life in an equitable world. - The Inside Out programme aims to equip youth workers with a solid youth development method to guide young people in their identity development. - Testing and enriching the Inside Out model that supports young peoples’ identity development (and youth workers working with YP).
