International Voluntary Service workcamps (further called “IVS-camps”) bring together approx. 15 youth from various countries for a 2-3 week collaboration on each local volunteering project. The youth participating will work together in an international team and they will develop various skills and attitude: cross-cultural communication and appreciation/understanding for cultural differences on the one hand; self-development, increased self-confidence, teamwork, communication and problem solving skills and many more on the other hand. Only if... the group leaders of these IVS-camps are well equipped to facilitate both learning processes. That is what all partners in this project underline. Therefore, we organised a training and evaluation seminar called International Volunteer Service for Life (hereafter “IVS4Life”) for IVS-camp group leaders. During this TC, we especially focused on introducing forum theatre as a method to prepare group leaders for their IVS-camp as this is a new inclusive approach for all organisations. To provide these youth workers with the necessary competences, we had the following objectives of IVS4Life: (1) To increase youth workers’ skills, knowledge, attitude and confidence to facilitate their IVS-camp young volunteers’ cross-cultural and personal development to bring about social change; (2) To provide youth workers with practical methods on team building, group process, problem solving, cross-cultural communication, reflection and evaluation; (3) To introduce forum theatre as a method to allow group leaders to practice challenging situations that they may face in their IVS-camp (regarding cross-cultural communication, social injustice or anything that blocks the personal development of the participant); (4) To develop an action plan for the youth workers to engage their IVS-camp young volunteers in their organisation's context as well as the regional and European level; (5) To implement the lessons learned and action plans in the organisations; (6) To share and evaluate the activities organised; (7) To develop recommendations regarding the training elements required for a qualitative IVS-camp.
