2020 Is the year that will mark the 75th anniversary of the end of the World War II. There will be many commemorations. During this special year we intend to organize a training course about war and peace for youth workers, consisting of workshops, educational games and creative writing. Although most countries in Europe experienced 75 years of freedom, we and our partners think that freedom should not be taken for granted. Even in the last decade of the XX century genocide and ethnic cleansing still happened in the heart of Europe during the wars in former Yugoslavia. The goal of our project is to overcome the alarming trend to forget many sad lessons of history and the dangers that come with it, by sharing knowledge about wars past and present with youth workers and equip them with new creative tools to inspire youth. Our project will enable youth workers to empower youth with knowledge about significant topics as: wars in the past and the present; refugees then and now; censorship and freedom of speech and the importance of remembrance. In our opinion this is not only relevant but very much needed in dealing with xenophobia, hate crimes, extremism and radicalization as phenomena in our society. Public opinions and general attitudes towards broadly known and critically important historical events like World War II, may vary quite a bit in different regions of the world based on the recruited education strategies and agendas. We and our partners know from experience that youth workers in different countries have different perceptions about World War II and also about wars and conflicts at the present time. As a result of local propaganda, (while a full picture of certain events is being exposed exclusively to the National government), or simply lack of knowledge, youth workers in many European countries often find themselves in dire need of extensive information and the right tools to be able to see wars and conflicts from different perspectives and to be able to interpret and understand the events and find solutions needed to gain and preserve peace thus limiting their options in helping young people to stay away from extremism and radicalisation. Loesje’s initiative is to implement a unique design of knowledge and opinion training using non-formal teaching by providing an effective history driven educational playground for youth workers to share and exchange perspectives on how to reach a peaceful multicultural future.
