We want the youths to have a better knowledge and understanding about hate speech, it’s effect on society and the differences between how hate speech occures and is handled in different countries. We also aim to learn the differences in what is taught about, and what is thought of hate speech in the different countries. Hate speech has been chosen as the subject of the exchange as it is something that has recently come out into the spotlight in the world, more so now than before, as well as the experience the participants all are likely to have with it. Hate speech contributes to social exclusion and increased polarisation. Moreover, such speech intimidates people deterring them from speaking publically, and thus weaken democracy. Hate speech fans prejudice, creates fear and anxiety among the affected groups and it deprives people of dignity. Hate speech can therefore trigger discrimination and harassment and/or violence. Research from the Norwegian Police University College demonstrates a clear connection between hate speech on the internet and the capacity and willingness for violence. Therefore this topic is extra important for us and our societies and we hope that by giving the youths this oppertunity, they will become a better citizen of Europe and better individuals in their local and national communities. And they will be more conscious around what statements one puts out, as well as learning about the effects (or lack thereof) of these statements. The objective is for them to learn more about the importance of understanding each other as Europeans, as well as the importance of listening to the opinion of others in order to be able to understand the background and context of one’s opinion. The participants are likely to pass on their experiences and knowledge to those around them, and are likely to be able to use their experience in situations they may face in the real world. The end goal of the exchange is to bring home a more educated, understanding group of youths to help reduce the amount of hate speech as well as its impact.
