Youth work nowadays results with great outcomes and opportunities, but also brings the obstacles and unexpected challenges on the way – which sometimes may affect youth workers in severe ways. As it is often forgotten, youth workers are human beings as well and they are often dealing with difficult/hard emotions during their everyday activities. We believe that majority of European youth workers are not adequately equipped with the competencies needed to discover and manage their own emotions, nor handle the emotional needs of those around them. With that in mind and based on our youth work experience, ‘Positive Impact Center’ and ‘Pozitif Ekti Dernegi’ together with 4 partners decided to create a project that offered space for sharing experiences and non-formal learning methods for facilitation of process of understanding own and others emotions - in other words, developing emotional awareness. The project “Recognize to Empathize” was initially a six-month long Erasmus+ project, extended to 24 months due to pandemic. During the project, we organized one mobility - a training course for youth workers, which was aimed at raising awareness about importance of well-developed emotional awareness in youth work. This project was developed to address the need for better recognition of own and others emotions and their expression in youth work through non-formal education methodology activities. Six project partners from trustful network shared the common vision on this topic so they contributed in its development and they agreed on project objectives. During “Recognize to Empathize” project, 26 youth workers coming from 6 partner organizations achieved the following objectives: 1) Explored the concept of emotional awareness and found a common understanding of it in the context of youth work; 2) Facilitated their emotional awareness development needed for successful dialogue and empowerment of young people from their communities; 3) Shared good and bad youth work practices in relation to emotional awareness and learn from each other experiences; 4) Created new methods and tools for young people’s emotional awareness development based on non-formal and informal learning methodology; 5) Promoted the networking within the Erasmus+ programme and strengthened the cooperation between the partner organizations for the future projects.
