The project “The Fantastic Five” emerged following the participation of Associação Crescer Sem Risco in an international youth exchange in Slovenia, in August 2019. The focus of this project was the importance of making the participating young people aware of different cultures, customs and the benefits of good information and education for the personal and social development of young people, in order to prevent intolerance behaviors towards people of different origins. We wanted to develop this project in order to give young people the opportunity to meet other young people from different European countries, share the benefits of meeting different cultures and regions personally, as well as motivating them to actively participate in their communities/society/region/country. We wanted to show young people that customs, culture and traditions can be a bridge between us, rather than reasons for intolerance. It was also our intention to show the participants that the lack of information, knowledge and formal education, can sometimes lead to the creation of bad stereotypes and that the sharing of information and experiences among the participants, arising from previous experiences, could show new possibilities of learning and good development. In this way, and always with the principle that different cultures and customs can connect young people from different countries and origins, we want young people to know a little more about European diversity, working, at the same time, towards a more united Europe. Thus, our main objectives were to train young people to promote their culture; providing new ways of getting to know cultures and ways of life; promoting self-reflection; contribute to the promotion of solidarity and tolerance between groups; promoting contact with different cultures (in loco); knowledge of new cultures/customs; contribute to the promotion of tolerance and the increase of social cohesion; contribute to the inclusion of young people with fewer opportunities; to show that, despite the distance between the participating countries, they shared the same customs and traditions; breaking existing prejudices (which are often the triggers for intolerance and violence); show that customs, traditions, cuisines should be reason to make people comfortable to break the ice, connect them, and not fight against those who belong to it; promoting dialogue and cultural exchange and showing that Europe must be united by cultural diversity. We are convinced that, with this project, we have made our contribution to improving the current situation of cultural intolerance through experience, that is, “learn by doing”. It is also important to mention that throughout this project, young people were approached in relation to new cultures, nationalities, religions and customs, different from those they find themselves inserted, through the encouragement of their creativity. It is extremely important to mention that the project “The Fantastic Five” emerged, due to informal conversations between young people during the exchange to Slovenia. After getting to know each other a little better and having more information about the Erasmus + Programme, the young people spoke with their “group leader” in order to create a partnership for the development of this exchange, in Madeira Island. It was noticeable, when we decided to create this partnership, that all the participating organizations had previous experiences on the topics addressed. The expectations that we all had in relation to this project were all exceeded, the young people were super excited during the development of the activities, the feeling of sharing was very noticeable, as well as the bonds created right on arrival. Unfortunately, due to the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, some young people who created this project were unable to participate in its development, as many things have changed with the emergence of this pandemic crisis. However, the young people who participated were also very interested and involved in this project.
