Media (mainstream and alternative) can easily fuel tensions, anger and frustration of vulnerable young people who lacks strong critical thinking. Migrants are generally under-represented and/or shown as delinquents or criminals. Although, media framing differs based on specific migrant groups the discourse is focusing on, immigration coverage across Europe is often negative and conflict centred. Frequent exposure to such media messages leads to negative attitudes towards migration, may activate stereotypical cognitions of migrant groups, and even influence vote choice. Female migrants are doubly disadvantaged as a minority in media coverage, as they are even less visible than male immigrants. The main methodology at the core of the project was Theatre of the Oppressed Methodology, developed by Brazilian Augusto Boal in the context of discrimination and human rights violation in Brazilian society in the 70’-ties. In this project we focused on Newspaper Theatre, which engages citizens in an interactive and very participatory way in a dialogue to explore and find solutions to different problems the community is facing, starting from media content. One of the newspaper theatre aims is to stimulate critical thinking and “consumption” of media content and to stimulate engagement and interest towards issues raised through the performance (linked with oppression cases covered or not covered by the media). The main goal of the project was to increase the capacity of the youth work sector to raise the civic participation and involvement of young people in democratic process as well as to develop their critical responsible media consumption behaviours. In this sense a training course activity targeting 30 youth workers from 10 different European countries was organized in Madeira in June 2021. The project had the following objectives meant to support reaching the aim: • To introduce innovative methodologies (such as Newspaper Theatre) in youth work field across Europe; • To raise the capacity of partner organizations to operate at European level in critical media consumption; • To stimulate the exchange of best practices in youth work in working with newspaper theatre in tackling issues faced by young people; • To stimulate the development of a network of Newspaper Theatre practitioners in various regions of Europe; • To improve project management, communication, team leading and motivations skills for youth workers; • To develop strong pro-active attitudes and the sense of initiative among the partners NGO members and also among the beneficiaries of the partners (young people).
