“Understanding migration” Training Course gathered 32 youth workers from 8 countries for 9 days in Cruz Quebrada, Lisbon, in September 2022, to confront the challenges and opportunities related to migration in Europe as a part of a global trend. Training course was aimed for youth workers, youth leaders and those involved working with migrants in their daily work. For named people, knowledge and awareness of the topic and skills on how to address confusion, misunderstanding, anger, and fear regarding it, is essential for leading the discussion with youngsters and with wider groups of society. In total, 29 were participants with fewer opportunities. Migration is a crucial interest to young people whether they come from countries affected by immigration or those suffering the consequences of emigration. Knowledge of migration processes, the causes and consequences of migration and rights of young migrants are relevant to young people’s needs particularly if they are likely to become migrants or participants of mobility schemes or if their home communities are affected by migration. Competences in addressing migration in youth work are essential for building community cohesion in those countries. This training course was aimed to empower youth workers to be able to explain migration, its reasons and obstacles, and through that create a development in self-awareness, cultural sensitivity, tolerance and acceptance. We were focused on developing participants’ teamwork, self-expression, supporting the reflection of different dimensions of migration and giving them a sense of initiative. Following facets of migration were discussed: the main roads, the highways of migration, both in geographical terms and concepts, causes and effects of brain drain, labor migration, study and experience, migration driven by poverty and infringement of fundamental and social rights. Following objectives were set: - development of a more tolerant, inclusive and egalitarian society; - support the reflection among participants on the different dimensions of migration and mobility; - exchange of good practice in the field of youth related to international migration, mobility and its influence on young people in the EU and in the partner countries and the opportunities arising; - training of youth workers to better address problems and opportunities arising from migration; - transfer and development of knowledge of European mobility programs in youth work; - promotion of European cooperation between NGOs that are in contact with migration and youth mobility; - the development of new initiatives in the field of youth and mobility within Erasmus +, to give migrants and local youth the same opportunities. Solidarity, tolerance & integration were fundamental values that this TC promoted. Activities were focused on the principles of intercultural dialogue & social inclusion, in both European & global perspective. The TC equipped participants with tools to spread these values among young people, to contribute to the promotion of a more open, tolerant environment which offers the same opportunities to everyone. The course helped to improve the skills & abilities of young people, including those with fewer opportunities, improving the quality of youth work, social inclusion, base & cross skills of youth workers, intercultural awareness, linguistic & cultural diversity & to increase cooperation & capacity building of NGOs. The TC developed, therefore, the skills of the participants in the work with migration & mobility, promoting debates & actions on European citizenship & the universal character of the EU's fundamental values, such as democracy, the rule of law & human rights & their potential to alleviate the difficulties of migration, intercultural dialogue, social inclusion & integration of migrants in Europe. With reference to all the participants, this TC aimed to develop their skills to deliver customized content & skills in youth work: "Understanding Migration" created a specific impact on participants, developing their skills & abilities in youth work, useful in addressing migration & mobility with young people of their local community & in collaboration with other youth organizations in Europe. This impact was reflected, then, on youth related to the partner organizations: they have now the opportunity to participate in new projects developed & in a long term perspective, migrants will benefit from more comprehensive & opportunities for integration & mobility, local & not, that NGOs involved in the project are able to develop & ensure in their reference contexts. Young people & local host communities developed, however, tolerance & openness to integrate migrants into its social context, limiting social tensions & conflicts.
