Objectives

When we compare local communities across Europe, the issues affecting young people shift and change like a kaleidoscope. But recent scientific research posits that regardless of variation in local issues, engaging young people with their emotions through arts such as theatre is a vital part of personal development in any community. Considering this, all partner organisations acknowledged that there is a real need among teenagers and young adults for a project that uses theatre as a tool to express themselves and learn new things in this ever-changing world. This represented the main motivation when we decided to implement this project. Through this project, the young participants had the chance to explore the limits of their imagination, express themselves and stimulate their sense of community and inclusion; thus growing into functional members of society. This Youth Exchange project addressed the following issues among youth: 1. Mental health: The link between creative expression and positive mental health has been known for quite some time now, yet there were few projects who put this into practice. 2. Mood: A study from The Theatre Times showed that participants reported higher, more cheerful moods after introducing theatre or any related art forms into their lives. 3. Stress: Allowing teenagers brain some variety and opportunity for expressive outlet and imagination, helped them better manage stressful situations according to UNC Healthy Heels. 4. Social anxiety: theatre and training through theatre can reduce fearfulness and anxiety among teens struggling with social interactions, suggested a new study from the University of Arts from Berlin. Initially, this project involved five partner organisations from RO, HU, SK, MK and BG. However, due to the pandemic, the partner from Bulgaria was forced to withdraw from the partnership because 6 young people from the group of participants selected decided to cancel their participation and the national group became ineligible. The partners agreed on a common solution, namely to redistribute the number of participants among each other. Another change that we needed to implement was related to the merging of the two activities into one and implementing one mobility in Costinesti, Romania. In the first part of the mobility, the young participants stimulated their creativity, thought process and experience learning through theatrical instruments while acquiring the basics skills of theatre and in the second part of the mobility the participants worked together to create a play (script, scenery, costumes, music, acting and directing), that was played out during the mobility and streamed on social media. Objectives achieved: O1: young people from RO, HU, MK and SK worked in intercultural ensembles; specifically enhancing abilities/competences of listening/respect towards others and exhibiting a fundamental working knowledge of the basic areas of theatre art (acting, directing, design, voice, etc.) O2: The young participants developed competences in oral language and expressive mechanisms (voice and physicality expression), as well as developed understanding in psychological and moral analysis of a character (analytical aptitudes) and learnt the elements of stagecraft and production; O3: Improved abilities of the participants on various aspects related to play creation (script, scenery, costumes, music, acting, directing and recording); O4: Increased partner’s capabilities in implementing similar E+ projects, to be able to better understand and embed the need for arts and theatre in our modern society and help participants facing fewer opportunities/participants that lack social skills overcome their situation with the help of theatre. Contribution to E+ and EU: 1. Inclusive Societies – Enable and ensure the inclusion of all young people in society by ensuring that all young people have equal access to formal and non-formal learning environments, addressing all the dimensions of inclusion (EU -Youth Goals). 2. Quality learning - Integrate and improve different forms of learning, equipping young people for the challenges of an ever-changing life in the 21st century.
