We have been invited to be part of a European research about how much young people spend time on the internet instead of using it wisely. We have reached following results through our volunteers and the volunteers of our partner organizations: - The average time spent on social networks is 2 and a half hours per day (the minimum being an hour and 15 minutes, and the maximum of 7 hours), - 80% of the time spent on the phone is checking in on social media for uploading or looking at the pictures and videos, - 36% play games, for nearly 6 hours a day, - 30% watch TV on mobile devices, - 28% is not making sport and facing with obesity due to lack of movement, Furthermore, the researches on literature showed us the media space has become part of our lives since the 2000s, but especially in the lives of young people born practically in the digital age. The increasing popularity of online and social media channels has revolutionized the way that society, now perceived as global, communicates, interacts and shares information. Given this aspect, in addition to the positive aspects of the media channels, we must be aware of the negative effects that these can have on us, as individuals, but also as a society. According to Eurostat (https://bit.ly/2lz0oKc), more than 90% of young people between the ages of 16 and 24, use the internet no matter what type or level of education they follow. According to a study by RSPH - Status of Mind: Social media and young people's mental health - social media has been described as generating more dependence than cigarettes and alcohol, the anxiety and depression rate has increased by 70% over the last 25 years , young people frequently give up sleep to spend time online, which leads to serious physical and mental health problems, and the level of online harassment (cyber bullying) has increased considerably, 7 out of 10 young people claiming to have experienced such situations. Considering all research results, we have decided to carry out 'SMILE' Erasmus+ Youth Exchange project together with 6 partner organizations, for developing the skills of 35 young people to analyze objectively their own internet usage practices and their critical thinking on social media by using non-formal learning methods. To do this, we would like to reach following achievements: - Reducing the time spent in the online environment, on social networks - Reducing the influence of the posts on the social networks in the daily life of the participants - Increasing the interest for study and education wisely - Increasing the chances of employment in the labor market by optimal use of the media space for young unemployed participants - Critical analysis of materials published in the online environment and verification of information through research of several sources - Reducing the time spent on "harmful" social networks like Facebook or Instagram, in favor of those with educational content (Youtube - tutorials, documentaries, etc., TedX, LinkedIn etc.) - Use of the media space in a positive way (information, expression, learning), not for check-ins, likes and irrelevant comments to the posts - Critical analysis of materials published in the online environment and verification of information through research of several sources by members and volunteers of partner associations - Developing the capacity to meet the needs of young people with fewer opportunities and those at risk of social exclusion from the local community - Increasing the visibility of the organization through the promotion and dissemination activities of the project - Awareness of the negative effects of the media domain; - Developing the civic and social spirit and increasing the motivation to take part in volunteering activities; - Developing knowledge about European opportunities and the Erasmus + program. We have created a consortium with youth leaders from each partner organization to show negative effects of the media can be manifested at all levels of society and at all ages, so we want the results of the project to reach as many people as possible, in order to increase the level of awareness on this issue and to cause people to use the online environment in - in a healthy way.
