Objectives

Urbanization is a popular process that led towards having half of the world’s population to live in urban areas. The UN World Health Organization states that “by 2030, 6 out of every 10 people will live in a city, and by 2050, this proportion will increase to 7 out of 10 people” meaning that more young people than ever before are moving to cities and towns to find work, leaving few behind to work in rural areas. With this it’s easier to understand why the number of young people living in rural areas is in decline. Having these facts in mind, our project focused on rural development and attracting young people to go back to rural areas. Rural development and creating small crafty rural business were one of the main themes addressed by the youth exchange “AgroYouth – Turkey edition”. The youth exchange "AgroYouth - Turkey edition" was organized in Ürgüp Cappadocia in the period 24/02 – 05/03/2022. It provided opportunity for 37 young people from Turkey, Macedonia, Croatia, Italy, Portugal, Czech Republic and Romania the opportunity to explore rural development and small rural business. The main theme of the project was to motivate unemployed youngsters to stay in villages and start generate income through different rural business. The main objectives of the project were: to engage 37 unemployed youngsters from rural areas in a project about ensuring rural development and provide them space to discuss rural development in general, agriculture and food production; exchange best practice and identify opportunities for growth of our own villages/communities/areas; to train 30 youngsters and give them skills and motivation to create job opportunities for themselves in rural areas by increasing their knowledge on how to become self-employed; to enable them develop their own viable small rural businesses and at the same time train them how to face with the wide range of socio – economic issues; to work on development of at least 6 pilot start up business plans and to train youth in processing, marketing and consultancy; to develop a newsletter with developed pilot business with the aim to promote rural/traditional start-ups among young people; to allow youth coming from rural areas meet each other, learn about cultures and through this promote European Diversity; to teach youngsters on how pottery can be developed as a business (35 youngsters will make pottery and will sell it to tourists and local people in Cappadocia thus will learn how income can be generated through this kind of work). This project was an opportunity for participants to broaden their knowledge about rural development, agriculture, how to develop rural business and where to search for support of their business through various educative workshops we have implemented within the project. Participants took part in 4 field study trips, interacted and exchanged good practice with local entrepreneurs and did practical work on a producing pottery; experienced rural life, and learned how to create a small pottery business. Namely, through interesting way of producing traditional potteries and organizing a final event for placing produced artistic pottery infront of local people, participants learned how one small bussiness functions. These workshops allowed youngsters to learn practically how to calculate investments, profits and see how business works in reality. Youngsters from rural areas and interested in rural development took part in the youth exchange “AgroYouth – Turkey edition”. The impact on them was on high level. Their knowledge firstly about rural development and importance of agriculture was broadened, their attitudes and behaviors towards their place in community were changed (they became more active, self-knowledgeable, confident and started to think about their future entrepreneur rural business), they learned to appreciate and learned to respect the sources (in terms of rural land, culture, tradition) that our villages and communities have. Participants had a chance to take part in an international intercultural meeting and exchange ideas with youngsters from other cultures, tradition, backgrounds, their personal development was ensured, their knowledge about different countries was enriched. The project resulted with developed a newsletter that speaks about agriculture and the project itself; published promo movie about Erasmus+ experience; 6 pilot business ideas created; 40 artistic potteries made, positive example towards local communities that international cooperation is very useful, sharing knowledge, learning from each other can help us a lot in our future.
