The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced that as of the end of 2018, there were more than 70 million people in the world who had to leave their place of residence due to war, violence and oppression (the highest number UNHCR has ever witnessed in its 70-year history). This figure is 2 times more than 20 years ago and 2.3 million more than the previous year. This was the highest level since the Second World War. While the terrible reality of the numbers has made the world we live in unbelievable, Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, also drew attention to the issue by saying that the refugee crisis, which is a global problem, has reached unacceptable levels. According to UNHCR, the countries sending the most refugees abroad are; Syria, Afghanistan and Sudan. These refugees also took refuge in the most developing countries. Germany, with its refugee policy initiated in 2015, has accepted more than 1 million 410 thousand asylum seekers, making it the country hosting the highest number of refugees among EU countries. Germany is followed by France, Italy (355 thousand), Sweden (328 thousand), Austria (173 thousand) and Greece (83 thousand) with 402 thousand refugees. Turkey has continued to be the country hosting the highest number of refugees in the world in the last 5 years. Turkey hosts more than 3.5 million registered Syrian refugees as well as more than 365,000 other nationalities registered with UNHCR. The fact that the place where we carried out our project was Balıkesir was of great importance in order to draw attention to all these problems. At the time we prepared our project, we were getting caught by an illegal refugee boat or getting news of a terrible shipwreck almost every week in the Ayvalık district of Balikesir. To this day, dozens of individuals have lost their lives due to the sinking of illegal refugee boats who wanted to go to the Greek Islands from Ayvalık. Based on these problems, in our "Code to Live Together" project; It was encouraged to produce innovative and sustainable solutions using technology to the problems refugees experience in education, cultural and social integration, health services, employment, accommodation and communication. Thanks to these solutions, the sense of learning to live together, breaking prejudices and intercultural learning has been developed among the refugees and the people of the region, and the awareness of living together has been developed.
