Nowadays migrant young people face many obstacles in overcoming the barriers that prevent them from becoming fully engaged participants in European society. Discrimination, language barriers, poverty, social exclusion, lower rates of education and skill levels, cultural stumbling blocks, higher risks of exploitation, and increased risk of becoming victims of crime are problems they face. Our project's aim was to empower these young people with the tools they need to overcome these barriers so that they can be fully involved in social and political life of the society and tackle unemployment. Specifically, we focused on volunteering as a tool for preventing marginalisation, poverty, disenfranchisement and increasing educational and trade skills in a non-formal setting. The theme of the project was the empowerment of young motivated volunteers with migrant backgrounds to create a replicable model of publicising the value of volunteering using creative and artistic means as an advanced level of self-organisation, socialisation, youth participation and empowerment. At this project young people also gained practice in youth participatory approaches and were able to help promote a better understanding of cultural diversity. This also matches with the key priorities of the Erasmus+ Programme of promoting youth participation in democratic life in Europe and labour market, active citizenship and social inclusion of disadvantaged youth. We were constantly monitoring the situation and followed the recommendations of the governments and health authorities of the partner countries in the part of travelling and border crossing. The decision to carry out the Youth Exchange on the scheduled dates was made only when the state rules of all the countries participating in the project allowed the groups to travel to Poland without any restrictions. The Polish side, in turn, were ready to receive the groups. This was confirmed by the official website of the European Commission: https://reopen.europa.eu/en. We used non-formal education methods to expand the views of young people on the definition of youth empowerment/participation as an alternative to marginalisation, unemployment and social exclusion. At the workshops and volunteering activities we made use of practical applications and explored ways of youth participation/empowerment through community oriented actions/projects in mixed nationality groups. Each national group introduced and multiplied the values of volunteering to other peer groups at the dissemination phase of the project in order to further empower youth to overcome the obstacles in their lives. The objectives of the exchange were: - to use volunteer activities to enhance the skills that youth with migrant background need in order to increase their employability as well as show the value of volunteering as a way to increase language skills, cultural tolerance, communication, peer interaction, and the ability to take on a project and see it through - to promote social inclusion and well-being - to involve young people in learning the skills needed to be effective problem solvers, people who can take ownership of the programme and thus develop more sense of follow through and sustainability - to raise awareness about EU citizenship and the rights that go with it - to empower young people and peer leaders with the skills to recognise that they can be agents of change in their communities - to develop participants' knowledge and motivation to understand the Erasmus+ programme and its potential - to motivate and support participants to act as multipliers in promoting common values - to use the exchange as a springboard for networking between participants that will be part of the plan to sustain and disseminate the ideas and tools learned in the exchange - to introduce Youthpass accreditation instruments to participants - to explore instruments, exchange experiences and possibly develop news ideas for the promotion of youth participation and youth empowerment among groups of migrant youth, youth government structures and NGOs.
