Objectives

The idea of the project was the result of joined project cooperation between Center of Innovative Approaches (UK) and Center for European Initiatives (Ukraine). This project is a third initiatives within the plan of action of 2 organizations focused on building-up cohesive European communities through the empowerment of youth and those who work with youth. Young people are the main users of Internet among population groups in Europe. They experience online and offline life as a continuum and reportedly make use in high numbers of the Internet on a daily basis. Based on the statistics from the Eurostat, 91 % of young people in the EU made daily use of the internet, compared with 71 % for the whole EU population. They are also more skilled than older generations and this gap is likely to increase in the following years with more digital natives entering youth. The Internet creates opportunities for participation for youth with disadvantages. However, the Internet being a strong tool for participation can also lead to a lot of harm for young people due to such factors as anonymity, lack of control of the quality and objectivity of the information provided there, spread of violence and hate speech. Across Europe, 6% of 9 to 16-year old Internet users reported having been bullied online, and 3% confessed to having bullied others. Based on Council of Europe online survey 78% of the respondents of an online survey stated they had encountered hate speech online on a regular basis. The three most recurrent targets of hate speech were: LGBT people (70%), Muslims (60%) and women. In order to use the whole potential and benefits of the Internet for involvement of youth into the active participation we need to consider those factors. For this purpose we believe that it is important to work in two directions: raising competences of youth workers to activate participation of youth online and to work directly with youth empowerment in order to provide multiplication and sustainability. The objectives of the project were: - to increase critical thinking, internet literacy and sense of initiative of young people in order to build a safe space for participation online; - to develop a shared understanding of youth participation online and to analyze the achievements and pitfalls of current youth participation in these processes; - to explore what are the rights, the means, the spaces, the opportunities and the support required by young people in order to meaningfully participate in the shaping of the Internet; - to engage young people online and develop their capacity and competences in active participation in the life of community; - to create opportunities for participation of young people with disadvantages through the online space; - to equip youth workers with different tools and practices of involving youth to active participation online; - to build capacities of youth organizations through sharing and exploring the tools of engaging youth to active participation in democratic life through online participation and activism. The project replied to the following needs: - new tools and competences of the youth workers for the involvement of youth to the active participation online and provide the space for the exchange of practices; - conscious use of the internet by young people; - opportunities for young people with disadvantages to be involved into the life of the community and influence on the decision making; - using the potential of the Internet and online resources by the youth organizations for engaging youth to the participation and decision-making; - encouraging young people to take a stand and an active position, being an active citizen. The objectives of the project corresponded to the objectives of the Key Action 1 as it helped to reach marginalized young people, equips youth workers with competences and methods needed for transferring the common fundamental values of our society, promotes diversity, intercultural dialogue, common values of freedom, tolerance and respect of human rights as well as enhances media literacy, critical thinking and sense of initiative of young people.
