Objectives

The European Union is currently facing a particularly challenging situation, not only because of the large influx of migrants and BREXIT nuances but above all because of the rise of far-right populist parties and ever more widespread tendencies of xenophobia and isolationism. Hence, we see a need for the youth to say their word in a 2 phased youth exchange Migration Lab. The migration phenomenon is often exploited by the right-winged political elite as well as by the media in order to present it as a “crisis” and a threat to the culture and traditions of the respective host countries. Because of this, several obstacles and opposition are damaging the sharing of responsibilities and the commitment to adhere to a common European framework with regards to the migration issue. This is directly undermining the founding principles of the EU and it constitutes what we want to change through this project, by encouraging European youth to collaborate and develop a sense of community. To make matters worse, poor integration is another result of the increasing hostility towards migrants. It becomes harmful not only to migrants themselves but also to the host countries which struggle to take advantage of the human capital that the migrants represent. To facilitate a more efficient integration process, we want to raise awareness among European youth about the migration phenomenon and encourage them to interact with migrants in order to promote mutual understanding as well as an exchange of knowledge, experiences and opinions. We believe this to be the first step towards increased tolerance and acceptance of our differences. The main objective of the project was to provide the participants with the necessary tools to better understand the current migration phenomenon, as well as to encourage the development and strengthening of values such as solidarity, tolerance and mutual respect. Another aim was to encourage the participants to become active citizens who embrace an interest in civic issues and the main socio-economic changes that currently affect our society while respecting the social and cultural differences of each participant. The project’s objectives arise from the effective needs observed both at the European and the local level. Thanks to the project we wanted the participants and migrants learn form each others through a wide range of activities such as presentations, role plays, simulation games, visits to local welcoming centers and an intercultural evening where each nationality showcases traditional food, music, dances, and the like. At the end of the project, in order to bring the message of acceptance of our differences out to the wider public, the participants will organise a flash mob. Participants did also reflect on the arguments raised by the far-right parties that are currently in power in several countries. They did develop the ability to respond with critical arguments to their previous statements. The aim was for the representatives of the participating associations to then bring back the knowledge and values developed during the project to their countries. We believe that now participants are able to promote important values, encourage successful integration, combat the rampant racism that we are facing and thus to create a more cohesive and inclusive society. Solidarity, tolerance and brotherhood are among the founding values of the EU. This project strives to strengthen and diffuse these values. One of the objectives of the E+ Programme is to promote the inclusion of people with disadvantaged backgrounds, responding to critical events that are currently affecting European countries. This project is directly linked to said objective as it aims to increase young people’s understanding of the migration context in order to encourage the integration of migrants. Considering that this YE has a focus on the field of education and cultural awareness, we strive to blend our outcomes with the ones proposed by KA1, such as more active participation in society, better awareness of the European project and the EU values, and improved foreign language competences. All these outcomes will be reached through the project’s various activities. Through this project we wanted to address the issue of integration and acceptance of migrants, working to help people acclimate to the idea that everyone is welcome and to normalise migrants’ presence in their new home countries. An efficient integration is not only right from a moral point of view but beneficial to respective host countries. We strongly believe that the first step in the direction of an efficient integration process is to encourage dialogue and interaction between European youth and migrants. By bringing together young people from a variety of European countries, each with their own challenges connected to the migration phenomenon, we promote European unity and for all the people involved in the project to develop a sense of European citizenship.
