Objectives

Our key needs/goals for this this project were to offer accessible, high quality training for newly engaged active citizens in skills related to: 1) COMMUNITY BUILDING: We sought to achieve this through developing the competencies of educational staff: > In working with inclusion and building diversity in groups and active communities; > In personal and collective resilience and sustainability in the face of urgency and crisis; > In knowledge, perspectives and expertise of community educators from across Europe. 2) HOLISTIC LEADERSHIP: We aimed to do this by developing the competencies of educational staff in: > Group-centered, agile, adaptive leadership techniques; > Skills to support empowerment and personal & collective confidence. 3) STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT: We worked towards this goal by strengthening our educational staff’s competencies in: > Understanding and framing civic participation and theories of change > Supporting effective, strategic decision making and planning in times of urgency and crisis > Methods of organising that bring longevity and expand the sphere of influence.

Background

Global2000 (G2k) is an independent environmental organisation using adult education as a key method to promote Climate Justice. We know that we need growth that is 'smart, sustainable and inclusive'. Efforts to meet the 20/20/20 climate/energy targets, as well as to address poverty and disadvantage (we see these issues as intersectional and inseparable) are paramount. Under the umbrella of our wider goals and building on and augmenting our 2018 and 2019 E+ projects, this project was designed to respond to a strategic opportunity and group of learners. We saw the need to increase national level capacity for citizens’ education that supports pro-environmental behavior in a time of climate crisis, in response to the unprecedented levels of public awareness, concern and mobilisation around the issue of Climate Change. This project sent 20 participants to be trained at the Ulex Centre in Catalunya, to improve our capacity to reach these learners with relevance and breadth.
