Project summary

COLTRANE aims to modernize and streamline cybersecurity education across Europe by introducing innovative education concepts in the context of collaborative cybersecurity awareness education. As most of the knowledge areas relating to cybersecurity are specific to certain areas and disciplines, cybersecurity awareness education creates an overarching theme to have the widest possible relevance, creating tangible impact on security, and creating a promise of not just academic discussion but real consequences in the security of European citizens. Awareness of the critical nature of cyber security issues is the key ingredient for students to focus on and appreciate security in any technical area, and lack of awareness is a source of tremendous issues, conversely meaning that improving awareness has an exceedingly high positive impact. Few other fields require such a holistic and multidisciplinary view on things than cybersecurity does. In order to understand cybersecurity and its problems, students have to be able to understand the technological, legal, economic, social and psychological aspects that influence security. Traditional forms of education mainly focus on knowledge transmission, but in highly dynamic areas such as cybersecurity this does not lead to sufficient learning outcomes. We therefore need more innovative forms of education that aim at the development of joint action: being able to act in a variety of situations, and knowing how to do this together. COLTRANE aims to develop cybersecurity awareness education in HEI that is innovative in four ways: (1) A holistic vision on cybersecurity, by not only focusing on resolving cyberthreats, but on the activities and implications in authentic organisational contexts; (2) A view on awareness of cybersecurity, which expands the notion of ‘being secure’ to that of reflection and sharing of issues relevant to cybersecurity; (3) A view on cybersecurity as collaborative, implying that all stakeholders have a role in cybersecurity, and that these roles need to be coordinated, during cyberthreats, but also after such events; (4) Reflection on the relevance and coherence of cybersecurity education across domains, organisational and national borders. This is realised in the COLTRANE project by (1) exploiting the affordances of cyber-ranges and collaborative learning platform to create hands-on activities as well as collaborative reflection; (2) codesign learning activities together with teachers, according to a framework for developing cybersecurity awareness education; (3) to develop a toolkit for teachers for evaluation of learning activities by students; and (4) to support managers and policy makers by co-designing toolkits for institutional implementation planning. The COLTRANE consortium consists of six partners, combining expertise in the areas of higher education learning and teaching, cybersecurity, state of the art technology, and collaborative learning and educational design.

Objectives

The primary objectives of the COLTRANE project were multi-faceted and aimed at achieving several key outcomes: - Develop Innovative Pedagogical Approaches: The project sought to create innovative pedagogical and didactic approaches tailored specifically for universities. These approaches were designed with the overarching goal of enhancing awareness and improving the overall state of cybersecurity education. - Inclusivity Across Disciplines: The project's objectives were not limited to technical or natural science fields but were inclusive across various academic disciplines. It aimed to benefit a broad range of students, including those pursuing Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD degrees in higher education institutions. - Integration of New Technologies: The project aimed to leverage emerging technologies to implement these pedagogical concepts effectively. It highlighted the importance of combining new technologies to enhance the learning experience. - Creation of a Digital Twin: A notable aspect of the project was the development of a digital twin comprising an interactive learning environment and practical exercises. These were facilitated through the use of a Cyber Range, a scalable virtual infrastructure. This technology was intended to simulate real-world incidents and environments, enriching the educational experience at higher education institutions. - Skill Enhancement: COLTRANE aspired to equip both students and teachers with a diverse set of skills, encompassing both digital and non-digital competencies. This focus aimed to address qualification gaps and prepare individuals for a competitive international job market. - Industry Alignment: Recognizing the demand for cybersecurity expertise in the job market, the project aimed to provide companies with personnel who had undergone comprehensive training and gained practical experience in applying cybersecurity concepts. - Guidelines for Teachers: Teachers were not left out of the project's objectives. It aimed to provide guidelines for educators to integrate new technologies into their existing and new courses. Standardized teaching materials were emphasized to ensure consistency in educational goals among teachers. - Fostering Multidisciplinary International Cooperation: The project aimed to create a foundation for multidisciplinary international collaboration. By establishing a common framework and goals, it sought to strengthen cooperation among institutions across Europe in the realms of teaching, cybersecurity, and awareness-raising. In summary, the COLTRANE project had ambitious objectives encompassing the development of innovative teaching methods, integration of cutting-edge technologies, enhancement of skills for students and educators, and the establishment of a collaborative community dedicated to advancing cybersecurity education and awareness on an international scale.

Background

One of the foremost reasons behind our application for this project is the ever-growing importance of cybersecurity in today's digital landscape. With the exponential increase in cyber threats, it has become imperative for educational institutions to equip students with practical cybersecurity skills. We have identified a pronounced deficiency in the implementation of hands-on cybersecurity exercises at universities. While theoretical knowledge is valuable, it must be complemented by real-world experience to prepare students effectively for the cybersecurity challenges they will face in their careers. Moreover, our research has revealed a unique opportunity for synergy among universities. Each institution tends to develop its own cybersecurity curriculum and resources independently. By bringing educators from diverse backgrounds together, we intend to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing. This collaborative approach not only enhances the quality of education but also allows universities to benefit from each other's expertise and materials, ultimately creating a richer learning environment. In addition to addressing the needs of educators, there is a growing demand from students and industry alike for cybersecurity knowledge to transcend traditional technical boundaries. Cybersecurity is no longer the exclusive domain of IT professionals; it impacts virtually every aspect of our lives and industries. Therefore, it is crucial to make cybersecurity education accessible to non-technical disciplines as well. Our aim is to bridge this interdisciplinary gap by developing resources and curricula that cater to a broader audience, thereby contributing to a safer and more cyber-resilient society. Furthermore, based on our experiences in previous projects, we have identified persistent misconceptions and a lack of clarity surrounding cybersecurity. We are dedicated to rectifying these issues by providing comprehensive and accessible educational materials that demystify cybersecurity concepts and promote a deeper understanding of the field among both educators and students. In summary, our application for this project is motivated by a strong commitment to addressing the pressing cybersecurity needs of universities and society at large. We aspire to prepare students with practical skills, foster collaboration among institutions, extend cybersecurity education to diverse disciplines, and dispel the myths and misconceptions that hinder progress in this critical field. By participating in this project, we aim to make a substantial contribution to improving cybersecurity education and ultimately enhancing digital security worldwide.
