Objectives

IniciativAngola is a bilingual youth organisation that originates from the bilingual milieu. As most of our members are members of the Slovenian minority living in the southern part of Carinthia, the topic related to the celebration of the 100 years of the Carinthian Plebiscite was very important for us and for our young members. With the project, we aimed to provide young people from both sides of the Slovenian-Austrian border with an opportunity to critically observe and interact about this, sometimes still controversial and polemic, topic. Furthermore, we aimed to promote respect and openness for the diversity that those youngsters at the concerning border face in their everyday life. The main projects´ objectives were reducing fear, prejudices and therefore raising tolerance and respect of human rights. The emphasis of the project was put on cultural and ethnical interaction observing everyday situations in the participants’ environment and the concrete European situation. With this project, we wanted to contribute to the social awareness, therefore the ethnic tolerance, prevention from the negativism and violence, equipping the participants with the capacity of critical thinking and afterwards encourage them to live actively the promoted values in their own environment. One another important objective for us was to work preventive against all anti-ethnic and anti-cultural realities that are threating to raise (again) in our society. The main objectives of the project were: - Getting knowledge about the Carinthian plebiscite in 1920, about the ethnical groups living in the South Carinthia and about the consequences of the outcome in 1920; - Exchanging knowledge and experience; - Promoting diversity; - Respecting cultural, individual, religious, gender and political differences; - Working together towards a cohesive, united and diverse Europe; - Contributing to narrowing down the existing social and cultural gaps; - Fighting all kinds of discrimination and hatred; - Promoting common values and defending the rights of individuals and ethnical communities. Main issues that we wanted to address through the project were discrimination, human rights, Article 7 of the Austrian Treaty (democracy), assimilation, problematic of the bilingual place-name signs, Church and bilingualism, bilingualism in cultural life, bilingual educational system, trauma, memory narratives, identity and group identity, dialogue, etc.
