The Hoopoe Summit Youth Exchange aimed at raising awareness that climate and nature protection are very important topics in our current society in Europe but also globally. If we do not start working together towards a common goal, we cannot protect our earth sufficiently. “In the end, we will conserve only what we love. We will love only what we understand. We will understand only what we are taught.” Following Baba Dioum, a Senegalese poet and environmentalist, we aimed to make young people from all over Europe conscious about current issues like biodiversity loss and climate change by offering them informal ways to learn about nature. Through letting people experience the outdoors as a learning experience, we could understand our role and our responsibility for the planet. We wanted to empower youth, who have the energy to share and spread this message, and who have the passion to teach others about our planet and the threats endangering it. We wanted to help people discover their potential while nurturing their curiosity for the environment, transforming individuals into compassionate advocates, confident leaders of their future and responsible decision makers. The intersection between social (youth unemployment) and environmental (climate crisis) workshop subjects pointed at the urgent need to increase governmental spending on quality jobs in environmental education. Europe needs - and so does the world - more youth working with children in nature. We could never have learned to love the earth so well, if we had had no childhood in it. [George Eliot] Our objectives summarized in bullet points: Empower young people to make positive impacts Inspire youth from all over Europe to adopt careers in environmental education.
