Climate change, poverty, the financial crisis, nature and environmental protection... these are buzzwords that have made headlines in recent years. They describe the great challenges that we have to face today. The association Europahaus Pulkau and its Erasmus + partners have considered how it can be possible to stop destroying the environment and to ensure that as many people as possible have a dignified life - "sustainable development" came out as a solution. This is how the project "Go Green - to keep this world clean" came about. The implementation would have to wait two years due to the corona pandemic measures. But based on the approval and participation of the participants we can say that after two years the interest in the topic has even increased. We are all consumption-oriented and consume every day, a lot and with pleasure. These also include numerous products that are not sustainable and/or are manufactured fairly. This means that resources are used up faster than they can grow back or are wasted, workers are poorly paid. Since we only have one earth and this should remain a place that we can live in for as long as possible, it would be important to live in such a way that nobody has to suffer: sustainable and fair. The principles of the quality of life of today's young people also include a clear attitude towards environmental protection and the conservation of resources. To do this, they must follow new rules of conduct that have a positive effect on their environment. Adolescents and young adults are currently astonishing many. In a very short time, a committed, self-confident and digitally networked young generation has become aware of the climate crisis to the public and to demand substantial changes. This is reflected above all in the "Friday for Future" movement. The Erasmus + youth meeting in Pulkau in July 2022 could be retitled as "Live sustainably and make the world a better place". The environment and nature are particularly important to the 45 participants from the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Austria, France and Italy. An above-average number are also interested in politics and value democratic values. They criticize the priority of economic growth and the harmful effects of a consumption-oriented lifestyle. In their everyday lives, they strive for sustainable behavior in a variety of ways, for example by buying organic products, avoiding plastic or eating vegetarian or vegan food. Some of you take part in demonstrations or support actions. The small town of Pulkau is located on the border between two agricultural regions of Lower Austria: the Weinviertel and the Waldviertel. Environmental and climate protection is currently one of the most important problems for local young people, alongside social justice and the state of the education system. Democracy is also very important to them. This also means that young people have high expectations of (environmental) politics to fulfill their tasks and obligations. They want to get more involved themselves and our project brought visible impulses and motivated young people on site to get involved in the implementation of our ideas. The youth encounter in Pulkau succeeded, as planned, in introducing new elements in youth work with small and large groups. Part of the implementation took place in nature under the guidance of a scientist and the practical examples could speed up the teaching process. What we could practice with the participants was a conscious selection of local foods, which sometimes brought us into contact with the local producers. Then rethink mobility and switch to environmentally friendly means of transport as often as possible or cycle more and, if possible, walk the shorter distances for the sake of health and, last but not least, avoid plastic waste. The digital skills that were used especially for the documentation of the small group projects were very helpful. Multicultural exchange was pervasive during the implementation of the project and communication between the participating countries turned out to be a key to the success of the project. New contacts and friendships were made and new joint plans for the future were made. Because the youth project was also a visible participation of the European Union in the promotion of youth programs, many then also applied for other projects. As well as the dialogue on social media platforms, which were also sent out by this meeting in Pulkau, shows that the "Go Green" young people are still connected and are looking forward to new challenges that the future of environmental protection will bring. They want to be in the first line.
