Objectives

The goal of Zine Camp 2020: Writing Progress was to network and exchange with people coming from different parts of Europe, working for change and diversity in their local communities, and to share skills related to zines. Writing for us as activists, educators, artists, culture, and youth workers mostly happens individually, therefore we wanted to find methods to encourage writing together, which requires a lot of communication, idea and knowledge sharing, and mutual understanding. Through this, we wanted to promote collaboration, bring people together, help to understand each other's struggles better, and learn from each other, and the diverse voices in our communities. Zine Camp 2020 was focusing on making the method of zine production shared within more communities. The training focused on developing a blueprint, a good practice example of knowledge distribution. We produced and tried out a model of a several hours long workshop format that can be varied and reused as an open-source method which was released as a zine at the end of the project. Within the project, we also focused on the process of collaborative forms of documentation. The training was aimed at people who formally or informally work with youth and pass on the knowledge in their communities. A week-long training consisted of lectures and workshops, exchanging skills, methods, and knowledge. We shared existing and developed new methods. The project envisioned the development of personal and professional skills, exchanging good practices between organizations, and strengthening the transnational networks of organizations working in the field of youth work. Through the project, we improved the possibility to voice out issues youth and young people have within society. We gave a tool to people to distribute their own perspectives. We shared stories that show all people growing up within Europe and the world that diversity is a part of human culture, which should be embraced and nurtured. We shared DIY zine production as a method for people to lose their voicelessness, as a tool of participation within society, and a practice of writing together as a diverse artistic choir of stories shared and distributed in many spaces.
