Objectives

We wanted to support our volunteer language teachers acquire new skills for teaching refugees and migrants in their classrooms. It is often the case that our volunteers do not have an education in pedagogy and sometimes struggle with large classrooms. Welcome Home International wanted to show its gratitude to the goodwill of our team of volunteers by sending them on training mobility to enhance their aptitude for language education.

Background

Welcome, Home International has multiple language programmes for refugees and migrants arriving in Belgium. We work both in and outside of reception centres. We use non-formal methods with native language residents to support refugees and migrants in their journey to acquire the language of their new home. Our teachers are volunteers who do not always come from an education background and often struggle to manage large groups of often non-speakers of the language being taught. It was important for WHI to arrange training to support our volunteers, who work very hard and offer immense goodwill toward our objectives and the people they teach.
