Objectives

With this project we wanted, in connection with the school's vision of internationalisation, to upgrade the structural component of modern languages by means of job-shadowing (attending lessons and entering into discussions with the management/teachers/pupils) in order to enable teachers and management to develop competences within the language lessons: - Use new didactic tools to teach language; - Digitalise; - use differentiation methods in order to better meet the needs of the pupil; - using methods to achieve all curriculum objectives even in large language classes; - offering pupils learning opportunities in other countries and cultures, organising meaningful international projects and mobilities that fit in with the curriculum of the modern languages.

Background

VKO Bovenbouw submitted and implemented the project "VKO BB internationally and lingually strong" to upgrade the structural component of modern languages. Pupils who end up in a language direction without it being their conscious choice (the so-called waterfall system), pupils in a language direction without any motivation for languages is something that is becoming increasingly common. Moreover, specific language courses are associated with a negative connotation. There is also a larger influx of pupils with a migrant background whose mother tongue is not Dutch, which brings with it communication and learning difficulties. So the school looked for expertise and methods to motivate pupils, to raise the language level, to give added value to the language subjects (learning opportunities in other countries and cultures through trips of several days, international projects, etc.), to make the lessons more up-to-date and enriching by using digital tools and to differentiate where possible.
