Objectives

The specific objectives achieved were: * applying a functional science skill set * improving social skills * combine critical thinking with creativity and flexibility * react appropriately to emergency situations and changed circumstances specific to the professional task load * be aware of the importance of quality-oriented work * be able to use personal initiative in a team-oriented developed product or process The company has three separate departments, each focusing on 1 aspect of ecology: Ponikve Water (Public water supply and public sewerage), Ponikve eco Krk, Ponikve services (For municipal services Waste collection, energy waste, ...) The students also visited these other departments and participated in activities. In the end, this unique experience far exceeded our expectations because we found the partner to be very open-minded. The partner was therefore very pleasantly surprised that our students had already mastered the various scientific operations (pipetting, filtering, etc.), unlike their peers on site, which gave them a positive success experience.

Background

Curriculum 2004-169 stated for the Engineering Science course in third grade TSO : internship does not aim to elaborate the 4 modules applied biology, applied chemistry, applied ecology and applied physics separately, but rather to provide general internship objectives, from which the school can choose. The purpose of the internship in this flow-through course of study was rather to get to know, 'taste' the business world. Our school is located in South-East Flanders, close to the language border, which made the search for internship companies a hell of a task given the unique nature of their curriculum. Such companies can be found in the port of Ghent/Antwerp but this is not so easily accessible from our region, so we saw an opportunity to look beyond the national borders.
