Objectives

Military conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa in recent years have put Europe in front of its worst migration challenge since the end of the Second World War. The period 2015-16 saw an unprecedented influx of refugees and migrants, with over 1 million people fleeing war and terrorism in Syria, Iraq and other countries arriving in the EU. In all these territories, civilians faced threats of armed conflict, human rights abuses and persecution. One of the most vulnerable groups of migrants and asylum seekers is that of young people aged 18-29. It was of utmost importance to take appropriate steps for their protection and their subsequent integration into society. Young people with such a status face many difficulties, including lack of awareness of possible support from the institutions; limited opportunities for integration and inclusion in European society; difficult access to the labour market and various social events. In response to EU efforts to support social integration, Amateur Sports Leagues prepared and implemented the RISE training course, which took place in the municipality of Belogradchik, emphasizing the importance of education and sports. 22 youth workers from 9 countries (8 program and 1 from the Eastern Partnership (region 2)) took part in the project. The ASL team believes that sport is an extremely effective tool for the integration of vulnerable communities and a significant contribution to interpersonal cohesion, the creation of a sense of teamwork, ambition for further development and inclusion in society. Through the application of non-formal education methods, the project contributed to the building of knowledge and skills among youth workers for the effective use of sports as a viable alternative for actively reaching young people of refugee origin and as a tool for their social inclusion. Within the framework of the project, ASL held sports activities, workshops, role-playing games, discussions, presentations, etc., which created a favourable environment for sharing ideas and exchanging experiences, and highlighted the great opportunities of sports to influence the socio-economic inclusion and adaptation of migrants and refugees to society, as one of the ways to fight against racism and xenophobia. All this was done in line with the key objectives of the Erasmus+ programme. The TARGET GROUP of the project was youth workers working with migrant and refugee young people struggling with social exclusion, poverty and unemployment. The project was created in order to respond to the following needs and problems of the target group: 1) Lack of a general program and quality work methods of youth workers in relation to socially excluded and isolated young people; 2)Lack of recognition and wide publicity of the best practices used to address the problem; 3) Lack of effective methods for building joint partnerships between youth organizations, and in particular those working with marginalized youth. 4)Lack of effective approaches to attract youth from migrant and refugee communities to sports. THE PROJECT TASKS WERE THE FOLLOWING: • research and analysis of the challenges facing the inclusion of migrants in European society and highlighting the potential of sport as a tool for integration; • improving the quality of work of youth workers, by providing methods and tools for organizing sports events in refugee camps and involving migrants in sports initiatives to accelerate their integration into society; • providing information about Erasmus+ and the possibilities for creating new projects; •preparation of at least 6 recommendations for integration through sports, to be implemented in the daily work of youth workers; •encouraging NGOs to share experience and good practices in creating an inter-organizational network. The MAIN OBJECTIVE of the project was to stimulate the active civic participation of youth workers and, in the context of intercultural dialogue, to present sport as an effective tool for the inclusion of refugees, migrants and young people seeking protection. The objective corresponds directly to EU policies to ensure equal opportunities for people, prevent the radicalization of young people and tackle intolerance and discrimination leading to extremism. The ASL team made great efforts to study the difficulties facing the integration of marginalized communities and to bring out the possibilities through sport to facilitate the processes of inclusion in the European society. The inclusion of youth workers from different countries created a network of organizations working with migrants and using sport as a method of integration. This upgraded the capacity and increased the quality of work of ASL and its partners.
