The key areas which the consortium aimed at mostly focus on developing capacity for the implementation of CLIL with an emphasis on CLIL implementation in classes with migrant pupils. The specific objectives were to: - train more teachers in the CLIL approach so that they achieve a good understanding of CLIL and a repertoire of techniques to balance language and content - train talented and experienced CLIL teachers so that they can function as CLIL trainers and mentors - train teachers so that they can develop educational materials for CLIL teaching - train Ministry officials and subject advisors so that they have an understanding of CLIL and support its implementation - develop positive attitudes and confidence in teachers and ministry officials as regards CLIL implementation with migrant pupils
Introducing CLIL is seen as a very important reform which is innovative and forward-looking and the Cyprus Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth is aiming to expand its implementation. A number of actions have been carried out towards this direction such as the development of new curricula and the establishment of the CLIL Coordinating Centre. CLIL involves, however, a different way of teaching and learning and requires a change of mindset and a new set of teacher competences. Consequently, teacher training and support has a central role in promoting CLIL implementation. In order to achieve CLIL implementation in all schools, a large number of teachers require training and support while there is also need for trained and motivated teachers who can act as teacher mentors, materials developers or teacher trainers. CLIL training is currently even more needed because of the increase of migrant pupils in Cyprus schools. CLIL can help improve the learning process for migrant pupils and teachers need support in using it confidently in their classes as it can support pupils both in their learning and in their overall social inclusion in school.
