Those involved in the creating this project were concerned about a high-level popularity of populist movements, corruption and nepotism in functioning of governments, and the feelings of political absenteeism among young people in their countries. All of the partners agreed that one of the biggest development issues today in the world and in Europe particularly is a crisis of democracy. People are losing their faith in the institutions and values of democracy, especially youngsters. We could observe during our work that most of the youth are not interested in politics, they do not believe in democratic changes and they do not feel their personal responsibility for these matters. That is why we decided to organise a youth exchange as a first step in encouraging young people for active participation in changes for democracy and standing for democratic values. Everything what we needed was to discuss all of those things and train the skills to lead the process. The aim of our youth exchange was to encourage young people for active participation in civic and local community work as leaders, advocate democratic values among youngsters and rethink different forms and models of democracy in the current political and social conditions, stimulate a public dialogue on democratic development in Europe. We considered the aim to drive a process of democratic development with the help of our generation, improve the quality of politics in “flawed democracies” and support youth participation and ambitions to change the things for better on local, national and European levels. The objective of the youth exchange were: to empower youngsters to test and rethink direct and representative forms of democracy for local, national and European levels of political process; to advocate core values of democracy such as freedom, equality, pluralism, faith in changes and civic virtue among young people from the countries with “flawed democracy” and “hybrid regime” indicators; to equip youngsters with knowledge and tools about leadership, public speaking, debating, presentation skills, critical thinking, and planning development strategies for their communities through non-formal methods of education; to help young people to find ways for actively participation in community work, to volunteer and develop their own projects in the field of democracy building.
