Project summary

A video library consisting of 55 instructional videos on various aspects of introductory organic chemistry laboratory courses available at LMU Muenchen will be adapted (written text, spoken information) to teaching in English, French, and Spanish. New videos will be added to include new synthetic or analytical equipment present in organic chemistry laboratory courses in the partner institutions Univ. Cardiff (Cardiff, UK), Sorbonne Université (Paris, France), and Univ. Murcia (Murcia, Spain). Videos in all four languages will be hosted at all four institutions and will thus be made available to students throughout the EU under the Creative Commons (CC-BY-NC) license. In parallel, a web-based module will be developed for each of the videos eliciting student response and activation. Both components together are expected to significantly facilitate the partial or complete virtualization of laboratory courses, which represent core components of undergraduate chemistry teaching in all EU member states.

Objectives

The primary goals of the project are: (a) the language adaption of existing instructional videos (in German language) into English, Spanish, and French; (b) the development of automated pre-lab quizzes based on the frequently employed Moodle platform such that associated question&answer (Q&A) library can also be used on other teaching platforms; and (c) the development of new videos for site-specific laboratory equipment.

Background

Laboratory work represents an integral part of all undergraduate and graduate programs in the molecular sciences in Europe. While the actual time devoted to theoretical and practical work in a given semester may vary among the bachelor and master programs offered at European institutions, laboratory activities are commonly involved in the curricula in each semester. Laboratory classes typically involve (a) a "pre-lab" meeting, where students meet with teaching assistants to discuss key scientific and safety aspects of the experiments of the day; (b) actual individual or team-oriented laboratory work; and (c) analysis and documentation of laboratory results. Social distancing and safety requirements imposed through continuously changing pandemic regimes will lead most EU institutions to blend traditional and fully virtualized components such that the best possible education of students can be achieved under a given set of circumstances. Instructional videos on the intended laboratory activities represent one component in the virtualization toolbox, combination of instructional videos with automated testing mechanisms on teaching platforms represents another.
