Objectives

Our 4 key goals: 1. Develop educational competences for enhancing psychosocial resilience for migrant learners With hate crimes increasing by 20 percent in Germany, the (IAB, 2019) reported that between a third to a half of all refugees in Germany suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). To build on our existing programmes in meaningful and supportive ways we needed to incorporate high quality educational content which addressed the emotional and physical impacts of social exclusion, and provide practical tools for educators and learners on individual and community resilience. 2. Strengthen our staff capacity to support learners with tools for environmental literacy Another goal, in response to a marked escalation of civil society response to the climate crisis, is to extend staff capacity to support learners with tools for environmental literacy. In addition, we needed to extend our staff’s repertoire of activities to help learners to recognize the multiple ways that social inequality and discrimination underpin the climate crisis. 3. Strengthen organisational strategy and increase staff retention 4. Refresh our syllabus with innovative and creative participatory tools and methodologies for increased social engagement.

Background

Since 2009 Ideen hoch drei has supported adult education communities across Germany to co-create thriving learning contexts within the social/environmental justice sector. We are a learning platform through which hundreds of adult learners have developed social business and local community initiatives from conception to sustainability. Since completing a 2018 KA1 partnership with Col·lectiu Eco-Actiu (CEA) we have successfully scaled up our capacity to create intercultural education settings in response to the more than 1.2 million displaced people arriving in Germany since 2015. We met our goals through a range of projects which strengthened cross-sector collaborations; endurance & capacity; community engagement, diversity & inclusivity. Our KA1 Projects with CEA enabled us to create a variety of intercultural learning contexts, such as the Oasis Games Learning Villages, the CEAL network, Being Together bike tours, and the workshops organised through the “Karte von morgen” and our Ideenwerkstatt. We’ve seen improvements in our capacity to engage adult learners, especially from disadvantaged groups. A 2019 needs assessment uncovered new needs and goals, which the 2020 application was set up to address. These are detailed below.
