Objectives

The main goal of our project was to increase the media literacy of all members of our school community and to sustainably improve the quality of school and teaching in the field of digitization. To convey this literacy in a meaningful way, it was essential to develop a digital concept, for example, to teach age-appropriate work with digital devices. Mobile devices should be sustainably introduced into teaching, among other things for the purpose of internal differentiation and inclusion. Individual support of students through motivating use of new media should be possible to support them in their development of creativity and motivation and to prepare them for the world of work, but also to learn responsible use of digital devices. It was also important for us to reduce some colleagues’ reservations regarding digital media. This should be done through study days and mutual support integrated into everyday school life and collegial education with practical examples - demonstrated by colleagues from the school. We also wanted to expand our school network with regard to European schools in order to continue to receive new impulses for our teaching, but also for our digital concept, which will be adapted regulary to current developments.

Background

The title of our project already describes very accurately why we applied for this LA1: The consolidation and expansion of the digital concept to establish a “bring your own device” strategy. When we in January 2020, tablet use was already possible in many rooms of our school; in addition, there was the prospect of having fast internet available in all rooms in the future due to the fiber optic network. At this time, about 50 colleagues were already trained in the use of tablets and two tablet classes had already been set up. What was still missing at this point was a concrete digital concept for the use of digital devices at our school, this is why we decided to participate in LA 1. We have partner schools in European countries for many years, therefore, we had already gained some insight into how digital devices are used there. The option of job shadowing at these partner schools was obvious. In addition, we also wanted to get in touch with other European schools or teachers to receive new ideas and discuss existing ones at international ICT training courses. The outbreak of COVID in spring 2020 and the resulting changes in school life with regard to digital teaching should confirm our idea; but that should be reported elsewhere.
