If we want to introduce our students to digital and sustainable concepts, everyone involved in the day to day operations of our school needs to have a good grasp on what these concepts entail. The first aim of this project, therefore, was to determine the current situation at our school in terms of digital and sustainable development. The necessary information for compiling such an analysis was to be learned from visiting training courses or observing other practices during job shadowing activities at other European schools. Starting from this analysis of the current situation, it was the next goal to determine what needed to be accomplished in terms of infrastructure and activities in order to improve upon the current concepts and become more sustainable and digital. In this phase, new concepts were to be discussed and developed before finally introducing them. After the implementation of the concepts, they were to be evaluated by testing them for effectiveness. If any problems were to be noticed, the concepts once again would have been discussed and the issues fixed or if they proved to be unfixable new concepts should have been developed.
In order to teach and educate our students in the best way possible, it is necessary to keep up with current trends in the world of work and social issues. Over the last few years, there has been a noticeable digital shift in nearly all sectors of economy and employers are looking for certain digital competences when hiring new employees or apprentices. As more and more digital tools are used in communication and at the workplace in general, applicants who are able to work with those clearly do have an advantage. Similarly, the concept of sustainability has become an important part of social life, production processes and political debates. A scarcity of resources has led to companies taking a more responsible approach to dealing with their materials and the on-going discussion about climate change and its effects has influenced the way many communities think and led to a variety of new laws. As a secondary and vocational school, we accept our responsibility to teach our students about sustainability, sustainable concepts and introduce them to digital tools and media. We also think that we have to be a role model in terms of sustainable ways of living and responsible and innovative use of digital media.
