Intercultural/intergenerational education and (lifelong)learningInclusion - equity

Objectives

One aim was to achieve greater empathy and understanding for the situation of the migrant students and of those who are probably not fit for grammar school, but were sent to us by there parents. We wanted to be equipped with methods and strategies to be able to support those students in the lessons and also migrant parents with paperwork etc. We also wanted to establish a better contact with parents of migrant students, so that problems, misunderstandings and conflicts could be solved more easily. Another aim was to help refugees from Syria (and in the course of the project from Ukraine) to adjust themselves to the new social and learning environment and to help them aquire a certain standard in German. All in all reading comprehension is a challenge for students in general which needs to be trained in all the subjects. Finally we also aimed at getting to know new ways of councelling our students in order to avoid them opting out of school. This holds expecially true for students with learning problems such as the ones mentioned above.

Background

The reasons for setting up this project were on the one hand that we are part of a school campus consisting of our grammar school and a comprehensive school which share a senior hight school. On the other hand we do not only have to integrate students from both school forms, but also have a rather high percentage of migrant students from over 20 nations including various cultural and religious backgrounds. Therefore conflicts arise among students and staff and students as well as their parents sometimes have difficulties in mutual understandings. Furthermore the number of students with disabilities / handicaps such as autism or aDHD grow steadily at our school. Consequently we were seeking advice how to support these students and the people who assist them at school (Schulbegleiter).
