Project summary

The project "Saving the environment with code" is part of a school partnership between Portugal and Germany. The goals of the project are to sensitize the participants to climate protection, to provide them with background knowledge for environmental protection and to program apps and to implement hardware projects that actively contribute to climate protection and also motivate people outside the group to protect the climate, e.g .: - An app that enables groups to come together to produce, save or share sustainable food (e.g. with solidarity agriculture). - An app that makes it possible to visualize and reflect on individual daily CO2 consumption. Similar to a fitness track app, users can be motivated to reduce their consumption - A hardware project could be a robot watering trees to reduce the risk of forest fires. - Another hardware project could be a change box, via which goods / food can be exchanged in public space and which is secured by a code lock. 60-80 young people between 16 and 19 years of age, students from both schools, are participants in the project. They work on eTwinning and in a total of four transnational meetings. They work according to the project method: brainstorming, effort protection, creation of time and network plans as well as milestones. They regularly reflect and evaluate their planning and procedures and present their products, among other things. at public events. The long-term benefit lies in climate protection, but also in expanding the technical skills of the participants.

Final report summary

The presented project "Saving the environment with code" took place within the framework of a school partnership between Portugal and Germany. The goals of the project are to sensitise the participants to climate protection, to provide them with background knowledge about environmental protection and to programme apps and implement hardware projects that actively contribute to climate protection and also motivate people outside the circle of participants to protect the climate. The results are: - an app that enables groups to join forces to plan environmental protection activities (e.g. waste disposal on the riverbank or beach) - an app that makes it possible to waste less food by providing recipes for cooking with the food currently available. - A smart greenhouse, as a hardware project, that enables as many (young) plants as possible to grow successfully and thus supports regional vegetable cultivation. Approximately 40 young people between the ages of 16 and 19, students from the two schools, are participants in the project. They worked together via video conferences and in a total of three transnational meetings. They proceeded according to the project method (brainstorming, effort estimation, creation of time and network plans as well as milestones) and reflected and evaluated their planning. The circumstances of the Corona pandemic were particularly challenging for us: homeschooling, travel restrictions, changed course compositions and a lower level of prior knowledge among the participants. We responded flexibly to these circumstances and found supporters in the "Hack the Summer" campaign of the Gesellschaft für Informatik (German Informatics Society) and a local nursery, who supported us with ideas and expertise. The long-term benefits lie in the participants' changed awareness through the intensive engagement with the topic of climate protection, as well as in the expansion of their technical skills and abilities. They have been able to catch up on knowledge that had been neglected in homeschooling and have been able to gain practical, hardware-related experience. Furthermore, the partnership during the crisis was an important experience for the participants: To remain capable of action, to create something together and also to overcome national borders online. The partnership was strengthened despite the difficult circumstances and forms the basis for further exciting projects.
