Project summary

Climate change is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, challenges in the 21st century. In this project, at a European level with partners from four different countries, climate change and its supposed consequences for different European countries from the far north to the far south will be examined from different perspectives. This is to raise awareness of the urgency of our immediate action. A qualitative study is intended to provide information on which alternative actions and waivers in which areas each individual can achieve the greatest savings in greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, it should be investigated why various countries in Europe are making very slow progress in climate policy and failing to keep their promises. In particular, it is to be examined in various European countries how willing people are to change their behavior or to renounce. In addition, the aim is to investigate the motivations behind a negative attitude in order to better understand these people and to approach them. In the intensive cooperation of students from different European countries, they acquire intercultural competence. By processing all materials in English, the students improve their English language skills. By presenting their results in their school, at the trans-European project workshops, at information days and before panel discussions, the pupils strengthen their presentation and communication skills.

Final report summary

Partners from Cyprus, Italy, Sweden and Germany worked together on this climate change project. Expert knowledge on climate change was developed, prepared and presented on posters for use even after the end of the project. In the first year of the project, the toggle switches in the Earth's global climate system were examined in more detail in order to gain a deeper understanding of them. Furthermore, the consequences of climate change on a variety of economic sectors and areas of life in each partner country were analysed. In the second year of the project, the commitments made by the partner states at the UN climate conference in Paris were examined and compared with the greenhouse gas reductions achieved and with the reduction targets in various areas of the economy and life of the respective states. In addition, the climate policy goals of the political parties in the partner countries were examined in order to strengthen the active participation of students in democratic life in Europe. Surveys were also used to examine people's willingness to forego and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Further investigations were carried out to determine which greenhouse gas emissions could be saved through these restrictions. In the third year of the project, the influence of the economy on the slow progress in climate policy was examined using exemplary examples. In addition, it was examined which changes in various areas of life can systematically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and how willing society is to do so. Through the intensive collaboration between the students, they were able to greatly expand their intercultural competence. At the joint workshops, students always worked in mixed national teams and the students from the various partner countries in Europe also spent their free time together. In the first 18 months, the workshops were held online due to the Corona pandemic. Of course, the personal contact that an in-person workshop makes possible was missing. Nevertheless, the students were grateful that an exchange in this form was possible. The students have matured greatly through the experiences they have had during the project and have taken the European idea to their hearts. In the partner schools, the ERASMUS+ project promoted openness and interest in in-depth European exchange.
