Objectives

With the "Faces of Fascism" project, we have worked through the Nazi crimes on Crete. "Civilization is just a very thin blanket that peels off very quickly," the lawyer and Nazi prosecutor Fritz Bauer once said more than 60 years ago. However, the political developments and public debates in various European countries in general and in Germany, but also in Greece in particular, this sentence appear more topical than ever. The common understanding of values of the European Union (EU) - democracy, freedom, tolerance and respect for human rights - has been under the centrifugal forces in recent years de facto questioned by national right-wing populist efforts in quite a few member states. We worked through the story intensively with our young participant, visited Holocaust memorials, interviewed contemporary witnesses and presented what we had experienced in a circus show on the market square.
