Allochthonous and autochthonous minorities are a consistent part of the societies of Europe. They have significantly influenced the history of European states with their culture and tradition. In Germany for example, the dishes of allochthonous minorities like Pizza and Döner Kebap became an enduring part of the native cuisine. Lately right-wing populist and right-wing extremist movements are trying to denigrate the role of ethnic minorities within society. Instead they make a case for the ethnically homogenous nation as a guiding principle. This guiding principle involves the danger of new outlawing and negates the positive role that minorities can play within majority societies. The genocide of the Sinti and Roma minority, which was committed by the German National Socialist regime, illustrates which consequences can emerge if ethnic minorities are viewed as an enemy stereotype. Therefore the youth encounter wants to promote the positive aspects of minority cultures and encourage the intercultural dialogue. It also aims to reduce prejudices and stereotypes. Furthermore it wants to embolden against discrimination. Within the framework of the youth encounter the youngsters receive basic knowledge about the allochthonous and auchtochthonous minorities that exist within German and Bosnia-Herzegovina and in this way they engage themselves in the history and society of both countries. With reference to Germany the participants learn how the migration of ethnic groups since the 1950s has changed the social life in this country. Concerning the second part in Bosnia-Herzegovina the youngsters find out which challenges a multinational political system has to face. Moreover the methods of political and religious balancing between the ethnic groups of this country will be presented. The remembrance cultures of ethnic groups within this Southeast European state form another aspect of the second activity. During both activities concepts which deal with integration work and intercultural dialogue will be presented. The youth encounter also wants to show how civil society organisations can strengthen the democratic participation and active citizenship of ethnic minorities. The aims of the youth encounter are the strengthening of the awareness of Europe´s ethnic-cultural diversity. Furthermore the project wants to point out the importance of the dignity of human rights, especially the protection of minorities, as well as foster the European identity. The youth exchange wants to encourage to a communicative cooperation and counteract fears towards ethnic groups which are often the breeding ground for ultra-nationalist, intolerant ideologies.
