Objectives

The media space has become part of our lives since the 2000s, especially in the lives of young people born practically in the digital age. The growing popularity of social media networks has revolutionized the way society, now perceived as global, communicates, interacts, and shares information. Given this, in addition to the positive aspects of media channels, people need to be more aware of the negative effects that social media can have on us, as individuals, but also as a society. Apart from the very large time spent online, what was particularly worrying for us was the lack of awareness and understanding of the negative effects that the unconscious use of social networks has on young people. Although they realize that the huge time spent online is not beneficial, very few are aware of the impact of this in their daily lives. Media action strategies involve more and more manipulative elements like misinformation, creating diversions to distract attention from real problems, exaggerating minor problems, offering partial information and gradually, appealing to emotional elements to reduce the level of objective analysis, promoting mediocre products, but also collecting information for the purpose of offering targeted advertisements, instilling a sense of guilt for problems that do not concern us individually, etc. Studies focused on the influence of social networks on young people increasingly point to the inability of young people to distinguish the risks of unconscious use of social media (personal data processing, loss of intimacy, social manipulation, etc.), lowering the level of self-confidence, anxiety, depression, considerable reduction of time allocated to sleep and study, tiredness, difficulties to adapt to daily life, feelings of worry and stress, disinterest in school and education, etc. Taking these aspects into account, we set the following goal: To raise awareness of the negative effects that the media and social media have on young people. We have decided to act for effective social media usage of youngsters with our partner organizations and decided to realize this project. In order to achieve the general goal of the project, we set the following objectives: 1. Developing the skills of young people to analyze objectively their own internet usage practices. 2. Developing the critical thinking and media literacy skills of young people by using non-formal learning methods.
