Objectives

We pursued several objectives with the German-Latvian youth encounter: 1. goal of inter- and transcultural learning: The young people involved in the project hardly ever move in transcultural settings in their everyday lives. The youth exchange enabled the young people to have an intensive exchange and cooperation with young people from another country. In this way, they came to terms with similarities and differences. They learned to endure uncertainties and to question their own opinions and views. 2nd Objective To reach out to particularly disadvantaged young people from rural areas for intercultural learning experiences. The young people involved in the project come mainly from rural, peripheral and structurally weak areas. The home regions are hardly characterised by internationality and do not have universities or technical colleges, for example. 3rd Objective. To create an awareness of the European Union and to interest young people in the European Union and its youth-specific programmes. The young people involved had little knowledge about the EU. They informed themselves about the Erasmus programme. Through the youth exchange, the idea of a European community moved into their own horizon of experience. 4rd Objective. Promotion of democratic competence. The aim was for the young people to experience democracy as relevant for themselves and for social coexistence. In particular, it was emphasised to the young people that in a democracy everyone has the same rights and everyone can have a say. The participants dealt with the basic concepts and functions of democracy and reflected on their meaning in the context of their lives. The young people exchanged views on democratic forms of participation appropriate for young people and brought themselves into the meeting and helped to shape it. The aim was to build a bridge between the abstract concept of democracy and the concrete world in which the young people live. The aim was to promote open and critical thinking among the young people and encourage them to participate in opportunities for participation. 5 Objective To strengthen media competence. The aim was to reflect on the ubiquity of media and their impact. The young people will deal with how they use media and how they can assess the content conveyed via media, where they can get secured information and how they can produce content for media themselves.
