Objectives

The project "Carousel carousel - we test careers" was implemented at the IB Berlin-Brandenburg gGmbH in Frankfurt (Oder) and at the OHP Stettin. The project was conceived and planned for disadvantaged young people from Poland and Germany who need social and professional support and who, due to their disabilities or disadvantages, have difficulties in accessing (international) mobility and the labour market. The "Career Carousel" project is based on many years of experience with young people who have difficulties in choosing a career. Through numerous projects with Polish institutions, it was recognised that participants rarely have the opportunity to test and try out professions. During open discussions with the participants it was often emphasised that their choice of profession had nothing to do with their interests. The young people from Poland and Germany contributed to the theme of the project by expressing their desire to try out careers first. In the project we tried to present a shorter version to mixed German-Polish groups and Polish institutions, as it is not known in Poland. There were 5 project objectives: Objective 1: EU Youth Strategy/Erasmus Plus. Young people had to prepare themselves individually for the different challenges in Europe. Disadvantaged young people find it particularly difficult to make a successful transition from school to training and work. They too rarely take advantage of the new opportunities offered by mobility without borders and a diverse European living and working environment. The Carouser Carousel project addressed this problem. The project brought together disadvantaged young people from Germany and Poland to experience different professions together across borders. Objective 2: Transition from school to work The Career Carousel is a type of educational project that is associated with a high level of motivation and interest on the part of the young people involved and their teachers. We believe that it is a suitable method to introduce young people to a wide range of professional fields in an experiential way and to provide participants with sustainable opportunities for a better start in working life. Through self-directed and team-based activities, young people can gain experience of self-efficacy and develop the necessary attitudes and basic work skills required for training and the labour market. The Career Carousel gives participants the opportunity to gain practical experience of working life and to extend their skills beyond their own boundaries. The project focuses on developing skills that can be used in the world of work. Objective 3 Diversity and social inclusion The majority of young people come from special schools, have learning difficulties or come from unstable family backgrounds. Disadvantaged young people are particularly at risk of social exclusion, discrimination and unemployment. In our project, we focus on developing social skills and motivating the target group to apply what they have learned. In our project, the young people experience social participation as well as the recognition and promotion of diversity. We see differences as a positive source of learning. We emphasise a diversity-conscious attitude where diversity is at the centre. By seeing young people as an opportunity and enrichment, we can prevent social exclusion. Objective 4: Intercultural learning For our target group of disadvantaged young people, it was particularly difficult to gain a foothold, integrate socially and find a job or training place after school due to individual and structural barriers to participation. We wanted to offer these young people new perspectives and support them on their way into European society. Our learning modules and methods for intercultural learning and diversity are designed to help. These soft skills are essential for getting along in our society. They are also important for the other participants, as surveys show that young people from eastern Germany in particular no longer see democracy as the best form of government. In the long term, the project contributes to reducing prejudice and combating exclusion and radicalisation. Objective 5: German-Polish learning in Europe close to the border The aim of the German-Polish Career Carousel was to counteract the structural weakness of the border area by offering opportunities in the transnational world of work. The young people experienced and practised cross-border cooperation at first hand and gained valuable experience for possible cross-border career prospects.
