With “moveurope! Promotion of mobility for young refugees through local action” we aimed to effectively increase young refugees’ access to the existing mobility programs (both national and European ones) and support them in exploring Europe and its numerous opportunities for young people. Since 2017, our organisation’s experience in the mobility topic for young refugees in Europe showed indeed the strong need they have to explore the European context and benefit from its opportunities. However, their lack of awareness of the existing mobility tools, as well as the often restrictive legal framework for this target group, often leads them to resort to illegal movement, or to stay in the country of first arrival without ever exploring Europe. Moreover, they often feel disconnected from Europe and in their daily life rather live the negative aspects that Europe has on them, for example when it comes to freedom of movement. Increasing the access to mobility programs for young people with refugee background goes along with Erasmus+ objectives to increase mobility opportunities for young people with fewer opportunities. By focusing on local action of youth workers in their local context to support and promote the mobility of young refugees in Europe through mobility programs, the objective was to multiply the knowledge we got on the possibility for young refugees to legally participate in short- or long-term mobility opportunities, whether national or European (ESC, youth exchanges), being volunteering or for educational purposes. In this way, we could increase the number of young refugees participating in mobility programs and having therefore the opportunity to explore Europe and exchange ideas and visions with other young people from all over Europe, making possible their involvement as European Citizens. At the same time, the project aimed as well to equip youth workers and people working with young refugees to learn and experience new skills and new approaches, such as non-formal education approach, peer-to-peer guidance in the mobility process, awareness-raising activities and learning about and promoting mobility programs, as well as experiencing such programs themselves. In addition, the aim was as well to offer to the participants in our activities the possibility to be part of a European network, to be empowered at local level in leading activities, as well as at the European level through the network of all other participants leading to new initiatives on European level as well. Finally, the objective was to bring together motivated young youth workers and guide them in getting active and in contributing as Active European Citizens to a more accessible Europe.
